We are not doing well here ....

Another 1,112 cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Alberta on Thursday — the highest single-day case total since May 15 — bringing the total number of active cases in the province up to 9,066.

Alberta leads the country in active cases, and infectious disease experts say this is beginning to look familiar.

“We’re pretty much on track to do exactly what we did last fall and this spring,” said Dr. Chris Mody, the head of the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Infectious Diseases at the University of Calgary.

Even after my father died of Covid back in Jan, his political ideology usurped common sense.
And due to my microbiological training, I was still optimistic that after the vaccine was distributed the virus would go the way of polio and small pox (essentially eliminated (at least in North America)).
But vaccine hesitancy, and the lack of common sense mask wearing has allowed the virus time and opportunity to evolve ahead of the "herd immunity previously hoped for.
I now fear Covid may be with us to decades, if not forever like the common flu virus

Sorry to hear about your father, Duane. And I share the same fear, this isn't going away anytime soon.

Perhaps things are improving in my small community too. Only 83 new cases and one death in the last three days. We had 8 deaths for the whole pandemic and then an additional 15 deaths so far in August.

Nice, I think 3 days ago we had 83 too. Our last death was mid February.

One of my co-workers contacted me yesterday, sounds like all 4 units in our building were declared on outbreak yesterday. Not sure of all the details yet, but sounds like I need to report in the next 48 hrs for another round of deep nasal swabs. I'm on vacay for a few weeks, but could easily get called back if things take a turn for the worse.

The U.S. State Department is now urging Americans to “reconsider travel” to Canada due to what the Centers for Disease Control call “high” levels of COVID-19 infection.

The new Level 3 travel advisory, issued yesterday, marks a quick end to a three-week period when the warning to would-be travellers to Canada had been eased to “exercise increased caution.”

That Level 2 advisory coincided with Canada’s decision to allow fully vaccinated U.S. citizens and permanent residents back into the country.

There was no specific reason given for the revised advisory beyond the CDC’s notice, also issued today, which pegs Canada’s current COVID-19 levels at “high.”

Only about 61 per cent of eligible Americans are fully vaccinated, compared with nearly 75 per cent of Canadians over the age of 12.

The U.S. is maintaining its existing restrictions on non-essential Canadian travellers until at least Sept. 21, citing the ongoing spread of the Delta variant of COVID-19.
