Experts, lol. There can't be any experts during an unprecedented event. By definition it is an event we've never been through before! All they can do is begin to understand small clippets of the situation as we go along, as they get first hand experience of how these viruses work. Not a single one of them can stand up from the off and say, " right, this is what we need to do guys". They're clueless, just fumbling about in the dark mostly. The phrase "the blind leading the blind" comes to mind.

Even when this virus is over and done with, if ever, and the next one comes along, which it will, they'll think they're in a good position to advise, in their capacity as experts having been through coronavirus. But the fact is the next virus might work in a completely different way to covid.....so we'll still be in unprecedented times and being told what to do by the same headless chicken brigade that call themselves experts.

Our government announced a huge new vaccine factory to be built in Melbourne today. Apparently aussie scientists have developed a vaccine thats 90% effective.
That still leaves 10% ineffective and I imagine the virus can mutate like the flu. as well so im not confident it would be 90% effective forever. They get the flu vaccine wrong every few years when they guess the wrong strain and everyone gets it anyway. Personally I dont get the flu vaccine and have only caught the real flu twice in 20 years, it is pretty nasty when you get it though.
The prime minister said this factory will put us in a very good position if theres ever another pandemic but as the last few posts have stated thats not guaranteed.

Maybe its my training as a microbiologist, but as soon as I heard inklings of a new, unrecognized virile threat. I started self isolating from all but essential travel, and non-crucial social situations.
Luckily about a month later, the Panamanian government listened to its scientists, and made it a law for any person to wear a mask when leaving ones yard, and locked the country down to outside, and even in country travel.
This lock down prevented Covid from getting to the island where I live for many months.
The only time a case appeared on the island, is when a bored young person snuck off to the mainland to party and brought it back, but the strong inter island mask and isolation rules prevented it from spreading to anyone, except the carriers family.
The only person I know personally in the U.S. , with a very bad case, is a man who believed the political football, ideology of those who pooh poohed the disease and considered it a hoax, he is now hospitalized with Covid, and a resulting slip into Pneumonia.
One other thing to consider is infectious dose, with any new virus, it is unknown if only 1 phage, or many can accelerate, or make the disease worse.
So it only makes sense to limit as much exposure to the virus as possible until we know for sure, if wearing a mask limits exposure (even slightly) I believe its a good idea.
Science is not static.

Hello; Just read thru the above link. One of the better bits of advice. Perhaps I should say one of the better bits of advice because it fits with my take about virus infections.
The title is a little misleading for many of us. I still have to go shopping for some things and do get out to stores. Being old and male I am at the stage of life where it is wise to know where all the available public restrooms are in my area. I am at the third stage of "old man" issues and do hope to avoid the fourth state at all costs. First stage is when you start to forget things like phone numbers. Second stage is when you forget names. The third stage is when you start to forget to zip up. The much dreaded fourth stage is when you forget to zip down.

It turns out that my current living situation has taken a turn from being slightly negative to a positive. I live alone and even before the virus had few visitors. Now I have even fewer. So being lonely and isolated fits right now. For others it is not so easy to be isolated. My younger brother got a new granddaughter since the virus and there have been visits because of this.

Hello; Advice from the "experts" (I will qualify this a bit later) seems to ignore basic "facts" from time to time. A classic is the advice early on about how we did not need to wear a mask at all, then the same spert later tells us to wear a mask. That the lie earlier was deemed OK because medical people such as him really really needed them makes some sense, but I would rather have been told the truth. I do not need to be treated like a child.

Thing is if you feel the need for good protection you will need a full bio-hazard suit. Pretty much anything less will leave you exposed to some degree. The best masks , N95 types, can black maybe 95 % so only a 5% will pass thru. All the other masks are much less effective. There have been some articles ranking masks.
A face shield or the plexiglass barriers are bound to have limited effect, but will have some effect. My guess is the shield will stop some droplets from a sneeze, cough or shout at close range. I also guess there will be smaller and smaller grades of drops all the way down to the aerosol virus particles. My take is an infected person is shedding virus into the air by normal breathing. Also the such aerosol virus can pass thru most masks.
The smaller and aerosol stuff will hang in the air longer and will drift around things such as shields and plexiglass barriers. That said a shield and a mask have to help some. Wearing a mask and a shield is bound to help some.

Not sure why the "experts" have been avoiding much discussion about the aerosol virus. That was established some months ago but still the public messages do not address that aspect of transmission. I can see how aerosol virus you might breath in from the air will not be as concentrated (loaded) with virus as a sneeze droplet can be. By that I mean it very likely is a lot worse to be sneezed or coughed on than to breath in some aerosol.
I hear talk of more lockdowns which seems to fly in the face of new facts to a degree. My thinking is to be forced to stay inside in a building now that we know there is an aerosol aspect to the virus will increase the chance of spread by aerosol. If you are inside and someone is infected the aerosol from them ought to float around for sometime. ( I have theory on this but will only discuss in a PM.)

Back to the experts. Thing turns out to be all the doctors and medical experts are not on the same page. To me some of the more famous of these have lost creditability over time. It is a shame we are able to shop around and find an "expert" that suits our frame of mind.

I'm afraid you are right about the "experts" Political affiliation seems play a huge factor, and they did admit that they downplayed masks initially, because they did not want to panic the general populace. Today, there was a Yahoo "news" article about the CDC quietly changing its stance in writing since the election, but not making public statements. The gist was they are feeling less threatened and can voice what they really believe in writing now. The article was very quickly yanked.

We had 187,907 new cases of COVID19 on Friday. This did not include the 10 new cases in my small county. The predicted shortage in stores has happened. At WalMart yesterday, the "good" brands of toilet paper and paper towels were sold out already, with a little of the generic brands still on the shelves. I'm afraid things are going to get a lot worse before they get better. Even though things are getting bought up quickly due to the surge of COVID19 cases, there are still a lot of fools not wearing masks in my area. I'm used to being questioned and having my temperature taken before entering a medical facility (was unable to be with my husband in the ER when he was in a bad car crash this summer), but I walked into a chiropractic practice last week where the practitioner did not wear a mask, and neither did most of the patients. I felt extremely vulnerable and unsafe. I think it is best to endure back pain rather than potentially expose myself to COVID19.

In my state, the "guidance" states no indoor private gatherings of more than 10 people and no more than separate 3 households. Maintain at least 6' distance between separate household members and wear a mask at all times except when eating or drinking.

Here's more the the "guidelines":

4. Practice Physical Distancing and Hand Hygiene at Gatherings

  • For any gatherings permitted under this guidance, the space must be large enough so that everyone at a gathering can maintain at least a 6-foot physical distance from others (not including their own household) at all times.
  • Seating must provide at least 6 feet of distance (in all directions—front-to-back and side-to-side) between different households.
  • Everyone at a gathering should frequently wash their hands with soap and water, or use hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available. A place to wash hands or hand sanitizer must be available for participants to use.
  • Shared items should not be used during a gathering. As much as possible, any food or beverages at outdoor gatherings must be in single-serve disposable containers. If providing single-serve containers is not possible, food and beverages must be served by a person who washes or sanitizes their hands frequently, and wears a face covering. Self-serve items from communal containers should not be used.

It looks to me that no one will be sitting at a table with loved ones and extended family helping themselves to all kinds of good food spread out on the table in front of them this Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Lol, i've just read your four stages of old man syndrome out to my missus. We were both chuckling at that, absolutely brilliant. Thankfully, going off your list, i haven't even entered stage one yet. I've already instructed my missus to get the shotgun out when stage four starts to manifest itself!!

Some folks you have never personally met, are telling you that now you should wear a mask, or now you should not; & that they are acting completely outside the realm of political influence, so you can really believe them. Now.

They are fine and honest, even though they admit that they lied previously.

And it’s OK that they lied because now they say they did that for your own good and certainly not for any political reason. These people who are political appointees...

Oh, And they will certainly never do it again. Unless of course they decided it’s for your own good. In which case they may or may not tell you. Because they know best.

This is their idea of a democracy?

Who are these liars?

This is why our country has a problem.

The guy is on the White House coronavirus task force. He is a neuroradiologist with NO specialized training in infectious diseases or epidemiology. It's a case of "I'm a doctor, so listen to me" who spouts out what certain people want to hear. Literally, with his credentials, I am just as qualified as he is to be on that task force and probably had the same training in infectious diseases when I was a dental student. And in dentistry, we have to take infection control continuing education every two years for license renewal. Sign me up. Oh wait, I don't share their ideology.
