How has the coronavirus affected your personal life?

So what do we glean from that? That people who are extremely clever, can also be extremely stupid at the same time?

Or that extremely clever people know something that others don't!

Hello; I tend to favor the second notion with one change. They may not know something for sure, but have done some serious thinking.

Seems like scaremongering to me. Half a survey's no good, they should have finished it off and got some reasoning from all these clever fellows instead of posting that info. Conspiracy theorists, as if there's not enough of them alteady, will be rubbing their hands together.

Meanwhile, in the real world.....

We live in the post-age-of-reason. Remember the fellow who carried a lamp during the day?
Probably a political stunt, but nonetheless, he'd be holding an iPhone today....

Meanwhile back on the ranch, for those of you like myself that are choking back on the wildfire smoke coming from what seems this year to be all directions, there is this recent paper.

Wildfire smoke linked to increase in COVID-19 cases and deaths – Harvard Gazette

SARS-CoV-2 test positivity rate in Reno, Nevada: association with PM2.5 during the 2020 wildfire smoke events in the western United States | Journal of Exposure Science & Environmental Epidemiology (nature.com)

Yesterday our Air Quality Health Index, which is scaled from 1-10, was at 9 most of the day. For those of you in the wildfire areas, an N95 mask would be a good idea, and if you are running central AC, a minimum Merv 13 filter.

Filters | McMaster-Carr

Hello; The links are for one place where you can order the air filters. There likely are others. These filters have to be changed more often as they will trap more stuff from the air.

My filter slot will only take the 1 inch thick so I would have to change them more often than the thicker filters. If your unit can hold the thicker filters it is my understanding they will last longer before becoming too restrictive of air flow.

My size is not shown on this site. A 30x24 x1 inch size.

I live alone so will not be needing to filter the air from myself. Those who have several people in a building with shared central air heat/cool could have some advantage. The second link shows that at the 0.3 micron size the filter is 50% effective.

Were I in a building with a number of others a look into a UV unit might be more cost effective over time. I cannot say what the efficiency rate is exactly and what the cost is now. There was a business advertising the instillation of an UV light into duct work near Knoxville TN. That was some months ago before the vaccines. I do not recall the cost and with inflation and shortages cost and availability are iffy. But last I heard last winter was maybe $200. Some electricity to run the UV light after the initial cost.

Hello; This is a link with lots of information. More than I actually wanted to know. Biggest drawback is exposure time as air speeds by the lights. Not much to be done in old systems with fixed fans speeds. New systems have “smart” fans that can run at different speeds. Seems to me tho that fast air will run the air past the lights more often. Not perfect but with an air flow switch would be on any time there is air flow.

I did like the last bit about how running a celling fan can help with dead air spots.

Hello; I picked this one to link because I could install it myself. Just cut a proper sized hold in the duct work. I would probably pick a return air duct close to the main unit. Could have more than one unit. May be other such units.

Hello; If I were wanting to cash in on the pandemic I would build a UV filter people could wear. Would have to be sealed so skin and eyes are not in the light. Maybe like the headphone deals some folks wear around their necks. Maybe a recharge battery.

Would not have to filter the air at all to kill virus, just sanitize the air. For those worried about others the out breath would need to be treated. I have read a lot of times wearing a mask is not for me, but to protect others from me.

Maybe a simple model to disinfect incoming air and a double light model for both incoming and outgoing air. Would be assured profit if such a system could be part of a mask mandate.

I have a UV light toothbrush holder. I may take it apart to see if it is complex. Note- none of you can steal my idea.

Exposure time, and dust. IMO UV is not at this point overly practical for most home heating/cooling systems.

I live alone so will not be needing to filter the air from myself

My reason for posting filter info, was for those caught up in the wildfires.

In those cases, such as millions of people in North America (and elsewhere) are currently in, it doesn't matter one wit whether you live alone, or not. Unless you enjoy the taste of wildfire smoke.

With so many fires going on, Northern California and Southern Oregon have a particularly bad smoke problem right now. For weeks there has been ash being deposited on my car. On any given day, depending on the wind direction, there can be good days and bad days. Last Sunday

I have severe allergies to dust, molds and tree pollens and am extremely sensitive to smoke. I put on a mask before I step outside. I'm on two medications daily with a third one I can use 3 times a day if needed.

The very best air filter for home use that I have found is the Air Doctor Pro. I have used four other air purifiers in the recent past, but the Air Doctor Pro is superior, IMO. It's the first smart filter I have come across. The fan ramps up if there are particulates in the air. No matter how careful I am, the unit will turn red when I am scooping cat litter or removing ash from the wood stoves. I now have 12 of them running throughout my house. I can now take off my mask when I am in my house. Even though I am allergic to everything outside, there is no other place I care to live.

If any one is on the market for an air purifier, check out the Air Doctor Pro. They are on the spendy side (compared to other filters) but if you keep searching, you should find a promotional site, and you should not have to pay more than $329.
