Oh, I will be going with some crappy cheap one if this passes to be sure. Doesn't mean that the current bill should be called 'affordable'.

I wasn't talking about Canada. There are other countries whose taxes are lower than ours, and their medical is still completely paid for. Part of it is paying politicians a reasonable amount instead for 173K-400K a year. Not all of course, but part.

Woah canadas isnt 35-40%! Our sales taxs are only 13%!

I think he meant income tax, not sales tax. Though I do wince at 13%. But cost of living is higher up there (at least it is in Victoria compared to Seattle).

we have 10% sales tax in good' ol AZ .. and I try not to let it offend me(it doesn't):)

Sales tax goes to the state, not the national government ... so not quite the same as we were saying about national spending.

Oh well still they take off like 13% off checks but i don't know how income tax works other then you usually get money back. Ya consumer products and everything is a lot more expensive here. Except education and of course health care is a lot cheaper. But atm the lock out isn't really affecting me. It's effecting my sister because she was going on a trip to tour washington dc :p

very true ....my overstatement.. but the point I was trying to make, obviously poorly, is THERE ARE ALWAYS GONNA BE TRADE OFFS...AND EVEN THOUGH PLACES LIKE NORWAY get taxed hard,,,,,,,,,, free college education... transportation. ..free healthcare...some places it works really well.. don't forget ,they have one of the highest standards of living in the world ..and life expectancy.. just sayin' ..long life.. good education.. low poverty rates .. money to spend...probably not comparable to the third world backwaters some would like to tell you happens to "socialist countries"

Well done guys....lots of interesting viewpoints and you've kept the discussion pretty civil.

It's tough to argue that the US has either an effective or cost effective health system, especially when such a big chunk of the country isn't even covered by insurance (which also distinguishes the US).

A good link: http://www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown...how-the-us-compares-with-other-countries.html

Whether the healthcare exchanges provide affordable options largely depends on the private marketplace. It's not the government but commercial insurance companies offering quotes on the exchanges. If a significant number of eligible people don't sign up for coverage, the market will react and rates will change.

I know that my employer has already told us that our health insurance is increasing again, and the insurance company tells us it's due to Obamacare... And I'm already paying the most I ever have, for the least coverage I've ever had...

The outcome of this shutdown/debate/whatever could directly affect the cost of medical care for me and my son...

If you haven't noticed, your premiums have most likely been increasing each year for some time:

The deceleration in health-care inflation breaks a historical pattern of increases in that inflation rate after a recession ends, and stems from "structural changes that are altering how and where care is being provided," the report said.

"For an industry that until recently has consistently seen double-digit growth, the ongoing slow-down poses immediate financial challenges," the report noted.

Healthcare cost increases are some of the LOWEST in many, many years:

"Total spending will rise with the cost of caring for the newly insured" under so-called Obamacare, the report said. "But the rate of growth, which is based on unit cost, should remain at some of the lowest levels since the government began measuring national health expenditures in 1960."

So blaming it on Obamacare is pretty much BS.
