How is this feeding routine for my Painted and Red Ear Sliders?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Interesting. I have never conditioned the water for my turtles. Just for my fish.

Do you think the fact that my turtles were mounting means they are a male female combo or do same sex turtles mount also?

Does your tap water have chlorine in it? I am not sure of the longer term affects of chlorine on turtles, but a buddy of mine rescued a frog that was exposed to chlorine and it looked like he had MC Hammer pants.

As for the mounting, all turtles are different so it could be either. Just try to sex them if you can sometime

My tap water does have chlorine. I know frogs skins are sensitive to water quality. I used to have African Clawed frogs. They lived 20 years!

If I posted pics of my turtles like the pics on the sexing link on the website you gave me do you think you would be able to id their sex?

Thanks! This has been a very informative thread!

I might be able to sex them. Post some pics of the nails and tails.

If I can't, I am sure there are others that can.

Lots of turtles!

Turtle 1: The slightly larger one with a nubby tail. He was the one mounting the other.

Turtle 2: The turtle on the bottom of the mounting. Slightly smaller.

Turtle 3: This is one of my smaller turtles in another tank. He is about 4 inches so he may be too small to sex.

Turtle 4: This is my 4.5" Painted turtle. I'm not sure what subspecies or sex he is. If you know I would love that! He is my oldest turtle at 15 years. I couldn't get his tail out!

Turtle 5: He is only 3.5 inches. I didn't think it was worth taking pictures of him as he is to small to possibly be an adult.

Turtle Tank: Thought since we've been talking so long I should show you my tank!

That is my large one. I will have to post a picture of my smaller tank with my 3 other turtles later. I didn't photograph that one.

Thanks!

The convict in that tank is so smart. It hangs around the log most of the time. Those turtles can't fit under the log like the fish does.

Since my turtles are adults do they need so much meat in their diet? The sink bugs do have a smell but it isn't harmful, just annoying. When I drop them in the water you can't smell it anymore. I have no idea if they taste bad but if they eat them why does that matter. Do they supply the enough protein. I would prefer to not have to feed them meats and fish.
The protein foods I sugested are to be fed once in a wille (adult turtles once every 2 weeks) and are safe to use. That is the rotine I have been using in the warm mouths in my large turtle group for many years now and they are completly healty and lay eggs every year.
Tiaminase doesant apply if you either use your fish straing from the market or if need be taw it in warm water. Never had any problem with it.
Dont use stink bugs, they can indeed contain noxious quemicals in their bodies and some are actually poisonous. There are plenty of completly safe to use protein foods, even if you rater not use raw fish and meat. Purina for example makes mazuri turtle food which you can buy in bulk cheap and has allmost everything your turtles need.

Turtle 1 to 3 are females for shure (the fact that you saw the big mounting another just means it has some male like behaviors, saw it many times in other female turts). The turt number 4 seems as well female but if you could take better pics of nails and tail it would be great. Its a eastern painted turtle Chrysemys picta picta.
