How Long Before Upgrade?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Arowana, Florida Gar and Clown Knife can all grow to 3'+. Depending on what type of PBs you get you could be looking at 3 fish that should grow 30"+.
One of the reasons you don't see too many of them on here that size is because people try to keep them in undersized tanks (i.e. 220G). A 300G would be way too small for all those monsters.

I would say you have at most 2 years in the 220G if you get them all at under 6 inches. Then an upgrade to 10x4 (600G) would be in order as a long term home.

There are plenty of fish you can keep in a 220G for life. Why not stock the tank with species you can keep in it for life?....just in case you don't land this dream job you refer to.

A Florida Gar will usually max out at 18-20".

I was told my tank could comfortably house the CKF and the Gar for life. This is true right? And if needed ill drop the Knife fish and maybe add something smaller like another Bichir.

I think if you go for a 300 wide with a 30 in width, it is good enough for your stock. Others will disagree but I think that will be your best bet. It will also has the best chance for it to fit in an average dwelling.

So guys if I can get a good deal on a 300 ill upgrade them to that for life.

Be sure you can get the tank and stand in your place. 300 wide is 24 inch tall so tilted, you can get through a standard doorway...but unless you have a really short stand, you'll need to have a french door or assemble the stand in your home.

Gars will not attack a fish they don't think they can fit in their mouth whether they are silver or not. They will attack silver fish more often yes, but, not if they can't eat them. I have
my new gar in with 2 Bala sharks and I'll keep you updated on how it works. The balas are about 6-7" and my gar is about 12.5".
