How long do you think this tank would last?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not surprised

I was also planning to get a hob and put plants on it, but i cant fit it on my tank :/

Not surprised. You can fill gutters with gravel, then put gravel in and a pre-filter sponge then you have an aquaponics setup

Can u explain to me about my another 285gal tank?

Stock
1 red arowana 35cm
2 black diamond rays 15-18cm

why i still have about 60ppm nitrate there? Amonia 0 nitrite 0 nitrate from tap 40ppm. Wc and feeding regime the same, 1-2x 50% WC a week, feed em what they can finish within 5minutes

Am i overstocked as well there based on nitrate itself?

My other tank dimension is 200cm x 90cmx 60cm

2x fluval fx6
1x eheim 2217

Please advice

Using the information you provided, in one tank you are adding 10 ppm of nitrates per day (the 80 ppm tank) and the other you are adding 5 ppm of nitrates per day (the 60 ppm tank.)

This is simply a guess since what you said is:

1) one is 80 and the other is "about" 60. Is it 55? 65? Are these values before or after you do a WC? Is your water really 40 ppm or is it "about" 40?

2) are your water changes 1.5 times per week and exactly 50%? Or is it mostly 1x and every now and then 2x? Or something else? Is that true for both tanks? And is it really 50%? Or could it be 40%? 60%?

I calculate 4.7 lbs of fish in the 80 ppm tank and 1.5 lbs in the 60 ppm tank which is 3x the bioload in one tank over the other. However, the nitrates added are only twice as high which could be because:

1) your estimates are just that... estimates
2) your average protein per ounce of food is different per tank
3) your food to fish feeding ratios are different by tank

But to answer your question. Yes. 60 ppm is too high to keep fish long term. It's the same answer as for 80 ppm. Growing the fish larger and adding fish makes the problem worse.

1- i use API test kit, unless ive a digital test kit then all my numbers are "about", except those who reads 0 such ammonia and nitrite. If u are familiar with api test kit, it is quiet challenging to read the nitrate values, the room ambient can affect the readings.. for me at least.

2- again, i simply divide the water height by two, so it gives me roughly half.. Is this for real? Lol.. i always do water change tuesday/wednesday and saturday/sunday. That gives me 2x WC in one week.

I understand that you are giving me good advices, since i asked for it.. i know im dealing with nitrate problem, so would you please give me solution for my problem?..

I am goin to use my old 60gal as a sump and add plants in there. That maybe can reduce the nitrate..

But if by any means you are saying i am also overstocked just by the number of nitrate it self and only it on my tank #2 (60ppm) , a 285 gal with only 1 aro and 2 pups rays are already considered overstock, it just doesnt adds up to me.. maybe i am wrong , please enlighten me.

Ibtried to use duckweed to combat nitrate, didnt work, it clogged the filter

I tried to use plants inside thr main tank, the oscars destroyed it

I tried to use HOB, so i could put plants in it, it didnt fit my tank

Lol should i just keep one betta fish in a 285gal so i wont need to worry for the nitrate?

By the way dont get me as "i only want to hear the answer i wanna hear"..

I want to learn here, but i just dont get it why a 285 gallon tank with 5 turnover rate, with only 1 red aro and 2 pup rays are already considered overstock just by the value of nitrate itself? Are we talking based on experience or just based on theory?

I will reconsider my stock on my other tank, the one with 12 fishes in it.. i will do something about it tho :) the sump is one of it, and also getting a bigger tank for them once i move to the new house.

Please advice :)

I would love to be corrected if i was wrong.. better late than never hehe :)

But also please give me advices lol
And i will see what i can do..

For the mean time i will increase the WC from 50% to 75% twice a week and start on building a 60gal sump with pvc overflow since the tank is not drilled.
