i know this is an old thread but i wanted to add my 2 cents. instead of all this bickering and claims of "research" supporting one way or another, why dont' you all just do a water change and test to see how much chlorine is in the water afterwards without adding any conditioner? i'm sure everyone has chlorine tests being the experts that we all claim to be. i think doing a 10-15% water change is not even enough to warrant needing more conditioner as the chlorine gets so diluted is is basically non existent. even a 50% water change is going to yield half the chlorine concentration from your tap, so even if it does take 15 mins like some claim for the conditioner to work your fish are fine just the same. before anyone flames or adds a rebuttal, do the test and see for yourself.
Your off to a good start :) I like the way you think next time im at wall mart ill grab a chlorine test kit.

People with a python could get a 55gal garbage can...use the python to fill the can before the water change (next to your tank)...add your chem's....use a powerheaed to mix that water while you do a water change. Use a powerhead like a magdrive or something that has a threaded output....unscrew your python from from the sink attachment...screw it to the power head...and fill. More steps yes...but maybe its better for the fish. Honestly I have always just aded as I go a little at a time to the area the pythong is filling in (over dosing really). Mayb I wont anymore....
Somehow I missed this post and its what I have ended up doing. Sorry bro :irked: Great post deserves a bump! (here I thought I was all smart and inventive lol)

Now that I am in my apartment(still can't hook up a python there) I put 3 cap fulls of prime(150gallon) in an 18 gallon rubbermaid and set it under the tub faucet. As it fills I take another 12 quart bucket and walk back and fourth and change 50% from the 18g to my 120g. Just got done today, but I also filled while I was draining out the door wall so I can get alot of tetracycline medicine out of the tank. So I did about 75-90 gallon WC. Took 20 minutes:D.

I add prime to the tank before I start the wc, then I pull out 50% and add the prime into the drained tank to treat the amount I am putting in.

Go through more prime for sure but the fish are worth it

Yes when I use prime I also think about how it decresses the amount of nitrates that are in the water that I am not taking out alos. So a little more is great. In emmergencies(like a sudden spike in ammonia, nitrite, or nitrates) you can use up to 5 times the amount with no ill effects to the fish.

The only problem is it only locks up those nitrates for around 48 hours according to seachem :irked:

Yeah but that should be long enough for you to figure out the problem and WC to suit it. Most likely in those scenarios you will have to re-cycle the tank... I hope that never happens to me. A little worried with the tetracycline that I had in my tank cause I don't know what that antibiotic might do to my bio.

Usually kills it :( I reccomend seachem stability to rebuild the bio bed. Shake it real good! (The bottle ofcourse)

I will keep a good eye on it. So far so good but today I changed the water real good cause it was the last day for the tetracycline meds and I'm going to turn back on my marineland400 and add a new carbon filter to it.
