how long fish keeping

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sure thing, bichir are air breathers and can live on land if they stay moistened. I used a glass dome and humidifiers to create a +100% humidity saturation. With a fine rolled gravel substrate. In about 3 years he could "walk" with decent proficiency.
I should also note that the longest he was ever out of water was almost a week in one stretch. And he was never removed while he had his external gills.
Did you have to swap him in and out of it? Sounds interesting, my wild caught senegalus walks very well on the carpet

Technically they can live in a humidome forever, but I feel like fish need to swim. But yeah for 5 years at least one aeronautical foray for a minimum of like 3hrs a day. He seemed to really enjoy it, but we may never know. Even got him to eat on land once or twice.

First ornamental fish was over 50 yrs ago. I was collecting native fish & other local fauna in the late 60's, then got away from the hobby when I discovered girls. For myself one of the greatest things about this hobby is the never ending learning curve. I clearly still have a ton to learn. Thanks for the kind words, Bill.

That's awesome, never see any info on that. I wonder if a paludarium setup can work

Although I am still learning its been over 40 yrs keeping fish.☺ TBH didn't get better until learning from the Internet.

I too have leaned a great deal from the internet.

Ive had cichlids for 32yrs. I may have went a year or two with a a tank in the house, but for the most part I have multiple tanks for that span. The smallest ever was 5 gallons, the largest 360. So many 75, 125, and 180's I lost count.

Yes actually I plan on building a 2 pool enclosure with about 2-3squarefeet of dry land so they can waddle about. All told it will be 1000+gal. But definitely something they love to do. (Hence, escape artists)
