Well feed it super worms 2 days before you move and then when you have moved then start pellet training again
I have neve tryed gating my aro on pellets as I don't see the point in having loads of different pellets floating and sinking I throw the sinking pellets in and the aro grabs a few when they are sinking but his main food is super worms
^ i want it's main food to be pellets for a few reasons. I don't throw sinking pellets in, i just throw floating in but after a few hours they sink.
Worms are ok, but i only have one fish that eats them. My Dats swim away from them!!
I have to travel to buy them, and they start to die after a week. They also start to smell. (granted i don't look after the worms as well as i should).
It did used to eat several types of food but will now eat only SW. After a day or 2 of gorging on them it will stop eating them and not eat for a few days, then it will eat the odd worm but most of the time just chew them and spit them out. The becomes a pain because the tank get full of crap.
Pellets just seems like an easier option.
Last night it was mouthing pellets, i think it ate 2 TBH.
I had enough today, i bought and fed worms because i need my fish to be strong for my house move in a few weeks.
10 weeks without eating, although i think it has been eating the odd stick.
Funny thing was while throwing worms in i threw a few sticks in as well and in between worms it was eating da sticks!!
I HAVE RAISED AN ARO ON PEDIGREE CHUNK DOG FOOD CHOICE CUTS I WASH IT OUT AND DOES NOT CLOUD UP MY TANK IT IS 3 YEARS OLD AND ABOUT 3 FEET LONG COMES UP TO THE TOP OF THE TANK AND ITS LIKE PLAYING CATCH I GIVE IT ABOUT 4 CHUNKS EVERY DAY
yeah thats how some people wean their fish. throw worms and pellets then decrease worms until they take pellets. like put your hand in and release a trail and they will get used to feeding like that as it gets released.
Hi classic, everything you have described is what i went through trying to get mine on pellets even down to the not eating prawns etc as it had pellets in lol
when you said you werent sure if it had had them, even this happened to me,id put a few in and then go in the other room for a few minutes and they were gone, but i didnt have proof as he wouldnt eat them when i was in the room lol
But he did start mouthing them and eventually took them, strangely about the same time you started but a couple of years ago,i think it went for around 3 to 4 months without me seeing it eat much at all,id give him the odd worm or bit of prawn to keep him going but always went back to starving him.
He goes mental for prawn and sw and crickets still but he will eat the floating sticks but we only get the 57g bags over here so i tried to get him on cichlid gold and some hikari koi pellets as they were available in big bags and he will take them sometimes but he has to be starved for a few days for him to take them but he will always take the hikari floaters even if i put them in at the same time as the prawn and worms.
I know exactly how you feel buddy but when you see him eat them you will be soooo happy and relieved.
Keep it up,you will win.
Also ive got a thin bar that will not eat pellets at all no matter what i try and hes so skinny at the moment ive given in and feed him prawn and mussel which he will eat.
Sorry to change the subject (only for a second tho) just read this whole thread an obviously there are some real aro lovers about so thought i would take the opportunity to ask a quick question. I have a silver aro got him when he was about 5" about 6 weeks later he is 9".
In the morning i feed him stick food (please dont ask how i got him onto sticks, i must of been very lucky! from the start i put him straight on pellets) and in the evening i feed him dried shrimp. About once every 2-3 weeks i feed him some feeders. Is this an adequate diet for him? Where i live we dont have a huge selection of different food however, i really love my aro and will go well out my way to make sure he is healthy! His colours are beautiful and he is active (a bit jumpy at times). From a semi-ameture fish keeper he seems in great shape, however just wanted your guys thoughts?
Thank you in advance & please dont think im hijacking the thread one answer is all i need !
@OP good luck with your aro really hope it works out for you!
I'd cut out the live feeders unless you quarantine them first and make sure they have no parasites or illness.
Try some fresh uncooked shrimp or a little bit of fish fillet.
If you've got it on 2 types of food already it's ok though.
Mine used to be on 3, but it just stopped eating anything other than worms when offered. I still picked the odd bit of shrimp up that is supposed to be for the Dats. It did it last night with a piece that was too big for the dats.
