Imo, you don't need to have EXPERIENCE to know a fish is too big for a tank.
You Need experience to know what would work.:screwy:

Common sense FTW

to me it seems preety obvious a 14" inch fish wont ever work out in a 12" wide tank (14" is the usual max i personaly have seen a 16" one at a very well maintained LFS but that's unusal)

man up and buy a 75 gallon and you won't have anyone saying theres anything wrong with that

also think of the bioload with an oscar and a sen only diluted in 55 gallons of water you'd be doing water changes everyday (once there full grown) to keep nitrate under 20 ppm

alright. i see your sarcasm :) and I reply with absolutely none.

I had an Oscar in a 55. I'm telling you, it just made me uncomfortable looking at him swim. Once he was 10", it just bothered me to look at him in what was becoming and ever increasing coffin.

My Oscar now, (not the same one) is 13" and in a 125. I can honestly say I can't imagine ever putting him in a 55. Probably the smallest tank I would feel comfortable placing him in would be 80.

I used to be like "whatever, its just a fish, he doesn't know any better whether its a 55 or a 125" I'm sure that's still true, he may be too stupid to know the difference...

but I try to imagine what it would be like to be a fish that big swimming 4 feet, then having to turn on a dime and swim back 4 feet.

Then add having to share the space with any other fish and it just seems too miserable.

So I wont consider you a monster if you did it. But that's the perspective from someone who did it thinking "whatever" and then regretting it.

I agree. Sometimes common sense is more reliable.

to me it seems preety obvious

Let's have some actual reasons/evidence here, other than "Duh, cause it's just bad"....Define for me why the 55 is bad, without using any of the above phrases (or variations of them).

While you're busy imagining what it's like being a fish, try also imagining you're a near brainless eating machine with no concept of space or freedom and not thinking like the most intelligent and advanced organism that has ever existed...do not apply human feelings to a fish

If I asked you if it will hurt if I chop my hand off, wouldn't you just say yes? I doubt you would give me an in-depth explanation on how and why things hurt :grinno:. Some things are obvious enough to not need explanations.

Sure.. Despite if you should or shouldn't be done, why would you set yourself up for that many water changes...? Oscars are notorious for getting HITH in small tanks because water quality reduces so quickly (never owned an O, so I am regurgitating what I've read as well). Why put a big fish in a smaller tank just from the effort standpoint lol?

I enjoy my water changes because they don't feel like work or something I have to do because my O's in a small tank.

Well...unless you have food and a small brain like Packer talked about lol
