I love how half the people saying "go for it" have never seen/grown an O past 12". If your O doesn't grow past 12" then 99% you're doing something wrong. A healthy O kept properly will pass 12" after a year or so...too big and too thick/bulky for a 55.

Well...unless you have food and a small brain like Packer talked about lol
I'm not making a comparison between people and fish, just giving another example of a question that doesn't need really an explanation, just common sense. (not really at all related to the OP)

no.... oscars need a min of 18 to 24 inches WIDE ( well length and width is what they need but 4 foot long is fine to ) heck i think convicts need a MIN of a 55 to thrive ( they may survive but wont thrive in anything smaller imo )

My point is that you're using "common sense" to justify your position about tank size...I'm asking why, rather than just "uh....cause it is..." Like this...

Sure.. Despite if you should or shouldn't be done, why would you set yourself up for that many water changes...? Oscars are notorious for getting HITH in small tanks because water quality reduces so quickly (never owned an O, so I am regurgitating what I've read as well). Why put a big fish in a smaller tank just from the effort standpoint lol?

See how nice and logical that is? This is a well constructed argument and by far the best reason why not to put an Oscar in a 55, much better than comparing it to a human living in a closet or some other foolishness.

Okay, but I still think it would be easier to just say "The fish is too big, the tank is too small" and let that be the end of it, imo that is definitely a good enough reason to not buy the fish.

It's sad that so much attention is paid to threads like this. So many people chastising the OP, and why? We can only offer our opinion and hope they heed our advice. Berating someone won't help the situation. As matter of fact in my experience it seems to make most people turn away from helpful advice. There are so many more threads that ask viable questions that seem to go unanswered and yet this one is 8 pages long simply because(at least it seems) that some would rather find fault than actually help. I hope I'm wrong because I love this site. There are so many people here with rare fish that would make most peoples minds spin. The knowledge and dedication needed to take care of these species and some of them very delicate is a true testament to the people on this site.So lets share not berate, lets be tolerant and patient. Most times patience is rewarded with understanding and enlightment.

Wait. Don't you have a 75 gallon? Why not put the afras in the 55 and the Oscar in the 75? That would work way better. The afras don't get very big at all and will be perfectly happy in the 55 gallon.

I was thinking about that to but the reason for the 75 was it was staying home and the 55 would go to college. The 75 would be more stable in params to because my mom would be taking care of it. I might end up doing to afras in the 55 but it's 20 of them I wasn't sure if they would fit. I might sell a few males now that I think more and more. I don't know my ratio they still are too young. I will discuss this more on that thread.

I think they'll be fine in the 55. especially while they are still growing. The jalos don't get very big.
