How many layoffs!?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
we laid off 20 people a few weeks back and were told that that will only be for awhile but me and 22 other people were laid off yesterday never been so happy to still live with my parents.

FINALLY got laid off. I know it's not something to be happy about by any means but screw it I was tired of the worry of getting laid off every day so now that I know I never have to go back I'm semi happy. I'm finally going to get some extra time to think about what I want to do in life. I knew I had that job three weeks before I got out of high school. so I never had to sit back and think about the big picture. now I have some time to think about what I really would like to do. and maybe get a part time job that I like. lol

i do commercial air conditioning and some commercial refrigeration...

when i started at my my company (july 08) there were almost 30 techs... there are now 10 or 11 of us... its nice to know im making the cut.. but at the same time im not sleeping very well and live in constant fear of being told "tomorrow you need to start at the office" which is code for "you are effin fired homeboy"...
january-march we were down to about 30 hours a week.. then down to 4 days a week and you were lucky to get 30.... now that its warming up again im finally once again getting my 40 hours but getting work approved is a nightmare... the "cool" weather is not helping anything... i really wish i was better with refrigeration...

I did get a layoff 2 1/2 months ago. The whole plant was nearly shut down. After several cut backs they eventually kept a skeleton crew of about 10 out of 100.
They have five locations, some where also cut to nothing, at least one was closed completely.
I was emailed to visit the office last week. They have new contracts and are recalling some workers. I don't get my old job back. But they have offered to retrain me in another position, which pays more. Not much more, but more than unemployment.
I was sitting on unemployment, not looking for work. As I never have taken vacation time. I thought it would be nice to be lazy for the summer. But I've been getting cabin fever, I'm sick of TV and video games. My butt is saddle sore from sitting all day. I've been cycling and walking along the river just to get out of the house.
EI pays the bills but not much left over for for fun.
I qualify for 9 months unemployment. I intended to use it all. But I'm going crazy. I'm not cut out for slacking.
So I'll take the job even though it's not something I'll enjoy. But it will give me something to do. And it will be nice to have some cash.
I've been careful with my limited budget. But that sucks. The list of things I can't do due to money is growing fast.
Shame to take all summer off but have no cash to do anything. Could go camping but even have to budget fuel. And now I worry about simple mechanical problems with the truck. Because I have no money for even basic parts. Suck to lose my truck because I can't afford to get it home.
Unemployment is not fun. Poor is not fun. Lazy is not fun. And I'm getting fat, even though I can barely afford to eat.
So I'm going back to work. I'm not sure if I can turn it down anyway. If I did does that mean I lose benefits? I think so. That's the first question I answer every two weeks to get my check.
"Were you ready willing and able to work during this time period?"
What happens if I say "No! I am not willing. Give me mo' money!"

Anyway, new contracts. Maybe things are getting better?

Alta-Fab in Alberta, Canada (I was a plumber there).

We were building modular structures for a US company. On December 26th 2008 the US company we were building for was forced to pull out of the contract due to financial situations. That day, work halted and they sent us home early. The next day they announced that they were going to layoff 100% of their labor force (about 190 people) until they find a new contract.

To this day they still don't have a contract and the place looks like a ghost town. I've asked for my job back about 3 times now with no luck. :(

Times are tough.

I went through a layoff and had about 5 months off right at the start of summer. I worked there for almost 3 years when I was told I was ****canned. I would lied to say it didn't hurt because you don't want to be in a situation where you are forced to have to do things ie look for a job later. I was luckily enough to be rehired at my old company nearing the end of my unemployment because someone had just left. Also helps to keep in contacts with ex-employers and leave on good standing.

After I was comfortable in the old workplace. They did a restructuring, I wasn't so much worried about getting cut but worried about my being demoted to desktop support again or something new and who I would be reporting to. They did let go about 15-20% of the IT tech staff but I know I am in good standing from previous people that work here who knew my work ethics. It doesn't pay to be lazy even though the job is pretty much dead end w/ not much growth. Everyone who worked here thought this job was cushy and not worried about being laid off. In the end that was what did them in.

It worked out for me I'm still doing back end administrative duties rather than support users on the front lines which I always disliked.
