Other than the changing of several laws that allowed the mortgage companies to lever up their lending and allowed much less strict lending restrictions in an effort to make home ownership easier.

Oh yeah...... and the Republicans ran both houses of the Congress much of Clinton's time, and Congress makes the legislation, not the president.

To attribute situations in the past to the sitting president is often misleading. Otherwise, Lincoln would be blamed for slavery. It WAS legal in some parts of the country ALL of his first term. No one attributes slavery to him!

The impact of the president is one of the most overstated influences in society. Everything is cyclical -- only the names change.

Well put!

I "won the lottery" last friday and got 3 months temporary layoff starting from march. There are some 100+ employees in the deparment I'm working on and only 5 of us got laid off for 3 months. The rest of the co-workers just got four times 1 week per month.

Actually I would like to know how is the legistlation in other countries. Do you have these temporary layoffs or is it just some finnish speciality? What I mean with this is that my employment contract is still valid but due some heavy savings program in the company I have been removed from my duties for some pre defined fixed term and I won't get paid. Luckily I have been a member in a labor union so I will get some extra money from the union on top of the average unemployment benefits.

By the way, is there some real english term for this type of temporary unemployment? I tried to look from some dictionary but didn't find a corresponding word.

^^^^^ that happened the first week of january. the entire month of januray i busted my butt looking for a new job and eventually found one. they offered me more than i was making (not before my 20% paycut) so i decided to take advantage of this situation..

although i recieved a paycut i still thought it would be in my best interest to stay with my current employer. i came in told him i got offered another job but that i wanted to stay here blah blah blah....

well i ended up having him sign a paper that states 'as of march 1, 2009 i will get my 20% back plus an anual pay raise'

i knew he would sign it but also took a chance if he didnt i would have just taken the other offer. i am happy where im at though.

oh and shortly after he laid off 30% of the staff and cut everyones pay hemade a deal with another company and is opening a second dealership (he told me this when i went to give my 2 weeks) its bs i think bc i know he wouldnt have been to do that had he not laid off so many people and cut everyone elses pay. thats where he got all the extra money..

I'm lucky enough to be with a company that has just expanded their workforce (in some divisions...). I'm 1/6 the workforce in Customer Service, and looks to be a steady job as long as I don't do anything stupid!

Anyone an insurance adjuster to pay the bills? I work for one of the software companies...

I live in a mining town (coal), and there have been tonnes of lay offs but thankfully so far it has been mostly the casuals. They haven't had to start laying off any of the full timers yet. The mines have also been getting rid of a lot of contractors which has directly affected the company my hubby works for (Kal Tire), as they have also had to lay off, or relocate several of their guys.

Part of the big reason they have had to so many lay offs, cancelling big projects, downsizing contractors is because just 3 months before the economy took a turn for the ****s 5 coal mines in the area were bought up by one big company, which put them into debt big time. Of course at that time the mines were doing very well, but 3 months later everything went south and now the big company is trying to salvage some of their profits to pay their big loan, which first payment is due sometime this spring.

Unfortunetly this whole town is dependent on the mines, so when they are doing poorly all the businesses tend to suffer. I am a bartender at one of the pubs and I've noticed a vast decrease in sales, but I'm hoping that it is short lived.

I'm glad to be a student during this time... my girlfriend's dad is losing his job, I have friends that have lost their jobs, etc.

I may not be paid much, but at least I know I'll be paid for the next 2 years! I've never spent more than I had and am not too materialistic, so as long as food prices don't go up I'm fine.

The recession sucks, but when it is over things will go back to normal - people won't learn a damn thing. Banks will lend like crazy when times are good and no one will think about the future until the cycle makes a full circle.

My shop went down from 125 employees to about 40. My line of work is directly affected by Ag/Construction fields since our major customers are John Deere and Caterpillar. My job is safe, although company wide our hours have been cut. I found a nice little part time job 20+ hours a week no weekends and decent pay. :)

Interesting......... Who are you looking to for solutions?

I did not start the thread to ask how to fix this jsut to find out who's being layed off where and how there company is doing the layoff. not what politicians to blame.

New news with my plant they ARE doing another layoff. This time We are being asked to volunter (sp) and they want 20 more people. But this one will only be a 60 day temp. thing lol Yeah right.

also I found out that I'm lossing money by working. Out of the last group that got layed off one of my friends is not getting more money a week then either my G/F or I. Be it's based off what you did last year. So In short I am going to get srewed the longer I work there b/c the pay I am getting now is doing nothing for me but drop how much unemployment money I can get. but If I take this layoff I'm going to get 52 weeks or unemployment. Assuming I cna't find anything else by then. but If I keep working and I get layed off in say 6 months I won't make crap.

It's odd that I'm getting punished for working for a company as long as I have.
