How much Ammonia

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Almost forgot. I also added a powerhead to put air in the tank. I've got it running wide openIt is really adding some aeration to the tank. I'll do some testing and post later.

Those Discus act like they know they are going in there.:grinno:

The majority of the beneficial bacteria is in your biomedia. The amount in the water is minimal. After cycling, we completely drained our tank and refilled with conditioned water. The only thing that could hurt your beneficial bacteria in your filtration system is if you refill your tank with water containing chlorine or chloramine.

Just tested again. Looks like we are still at about 4 on the ammonia. Just have to set and wait.

another thing i would add, you might want to cover the sides of the tank with newspaper or something dark whilst cycling. Reduce the amount of algae growing whilst the nitrates go up.

I am not running lights right now. I haven't seen any algea yet. The tank is not exposed to any sunlight.

Well I just found the heater is cracked and filling full of water.

I did another test. It is down to 3 now. Do I have to have a heater to make the bacteria grow?? I'm sure it would help.

You're going to need a heater for your fish, so you'll have to get a heater any way. That article on fishless cycling that I posted for you said to keep the temperature in the high 80s. I'm sure this just helps to facilitate bacterial colonization.

Yeah I know, I just had one break. Luck I didn't get fried. It is over 80 right this minute, but it does not have a heater. I had to steal it for my Discus.

Well today's grand news is; I'm still without a heater. The good news is, it is still going down. One more day and teh Nitrites should be coming up.
