how much do you guys TIP your waiter?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
some restaurants post or publish clearly, that a specific % "gratuity" will be automatically added to the bill. So technically, the business does it, not the server.

At most restaurants, there's only a tip automatically added to the bill when you have a table of 6 or more people. That's because sometimes a huge group of people will come in and take up a lot of the waiter's time for refills and other stuff and still NOT tip. Which is some straight up bull snit.

I really feel for waiters sometimes because I've seen this happen. Sometimes a big group of church people will come in and tip zero and its not fair. I think you should do whatever you want to do but don't complai n when waiters give more attention and better setvice to people who do tip. You would do the same thing in their situation.

So them making a decent living makes them what? Bad people?
They do a service for you and get paid half of minimum wage because you are expected to tip them if they do a good job.
But what ever, you are going to do what you want to do because that's what people like you do... only what you want to do.

who said anything about them being bad people? that's what I hate about the whole concept. "expecting" something from me. hey, make it mandatory and I'll sing a different tune, but because it's optional, I will tip what I feel is fair. not what you or society feels is fair

if you spend $50 on a dinner and wanna tip them $8-$10 that's fine. go all out. but I don't think being polite (which they should be regardless) taking my order, bringing me my food deserves $8-$10 for the half hour to 45 min that I spend there. I just don't think you did enough for me to deserve that much for the little time I spent there.

and stop people, with the "go eat at mcdonald's then" argument. I have the right to eat anywhere I want and tip what I think is fair.

Yo sumo-- I don't think you should blame waiters for expecting a tip. You should blame the system forin saying its ok to pay waiters $3 an hour and make the rest in tips. If they don't make good tips then no one could get by being a waiter.

Its not like Europe where they pay waiters a decent wage and hardly anyone tips over there. Waiters in the US need to get tips because otherwise they're making way way below minimum wage and everyone would quit being a waiter if no one tipped. Me personally I don't mind tipping but I won't tip if the waiter was rude or really bad. I also won't tip when I order to go and pick up the food myself. Some people take tipping too far imo but I keep it reasonable.

I do blame the system. I don't care if they raise the price on food, I would prefer them pay the waiters/waitresses min wage. and don't say that, that will cause waiters to not try as hard to serve you best they can. that's a whole other issue. they need to do their jobs like any other job in the business where you deal with customers. you need to be polite to customers and serve them promptly the best you can

maybe for the entertainment of watching you relish steak a la spittle, every time you return after never tipping & probably being an extra demanding PITA customer, whose every vibe wreaks of smug condescension.

OR, maybe it's just the only work schedule that fits with available child care.
You'll never really know.

I hardly ever go out to eat at restaurants so I doubt anyone remembers me. I don't go out to bars. so no one remembers me. and that's really really crappy of people to do crap like that to customers whom they think are not tipping them as much as they think they deserve.

boo hoo, cry me a river if child care don't fit their schedule to work at mcdonal's. it's not anyone's responsibility to take care of these people. they need to do something to make it work just like every other living soul with their own problems in life.

Sometimes a job is just a way to pay bills, any job with income is better than no job. This economy is rough. Sumo, do you still live at home?

yes I live at home. my home. that I worked for from the bottom up years and years ago. I used to be a cook at a fast food. I used to wash dishes. I used to buss tables for no tips. I worked for minimum wage. I seen nasty customers, I seen very polite customers. I've been talked rudely to. I never once was impolite to anyone ever. I always thanked them and always smiled whether I was on the working side or customer side.

but guess what people? when I felt I wasn't getting paid what I deserved for the hard work I put in, I did something about it. I left and got something better. and then better, and then better each job because it was on me to do something about my situation and no one else's responsibility

Lmao@sumo do you live at home

I agree with this

I wasn't trying to rip on you- there is no way to gauge one's age or context without asking. Many people gain a lot different perspective after they have had mortgages, bills, kids, etc all looming over them and end up taking jobs just make ends meet-despite hating the job, the wages, etc. I was simply curious if you were a person whose opinions were based on circumstances that were different than the aforementioned.

To be clear, I read 2 pages of this thread, certainly not the entire verbose thing to chime in on other opinions- so dont feel singled out. I was killing time when I should be working on a presentation- it was a good diversion.

oh no offense was taken rach. I was just making sure everyone understood I wasn't a 12 year old kid talking out my ass.

I didn't grow up with a silver spoon in my mouth. I done dirty jobs and low paying jobs that no one wants. I made my own decisions to better myself and my life. yes I have a mortgage, 2 car payments, and 5 kids

the thing that gets me is, because I feel this way, people automatically assume i'm a condescending douche to waiters and waitresses. i'm automatically ignorant and a cheapo and know nothing about working in the industry. i'm always, always polite to people who serve me. I never demand, never rude even when my order goes wrong. I always thank them and smile. you will never catch me being rude to a server. I been on that end and know what they go thru. I've never been a waiter but I've been a cashier, dishwasher and buss boy. nobody cares about you, you're a fly on the wall, a smudge on the floor. but that doesn't mean anybody owes me anything. I do what i'm deserved to be paid to do. and when I deserve more, I leave for better pay

Gotta admit there are a lot of young kids with big opinions!

I only have three kids and feel the pain, good on you, lol. I have never had to work in retail or food services, but have done my fair share of dirty jobs and had many roommates/friends struggling to pay bills while in food services (while in college, or looking for "better" jobs). For me, eating out is a LUXURY- I treat it as such. If I don't have the budget to tip really well (so i don't have to do the dishes, prep the food, clean the kitchen, sweep the floor, and get my own dang drinks) then I don't go out.

agree on the kids with big opinions part

I think everyone deserves to eat out if they worked for it. what they don't deserve is to be treated different based on the amount they tip

btw, I love the blonde on you.
