how much do you guys TIP your waiter?

Waiters and waitresses make about 1/2 the minimum wage in hourly rate. It is expected for them to make up the rest in tips. I go to a restaurant to be waited on...if they do that well they get 20%. If they do that exceptionally, they may get a little more, if they do it poorly, they will definitely get less. Let's face it, they are not making themselves rich waiting tables.

So you're telling me these restaurants around you are paying below minimum?

Most restaurants do. Waiters or waitresses will typically make about $5/ hour. It's legal. There is a separate state minimum wage for these workers.

good thing I never needed to wait tables. Waiters here get minimum tho. At least that's what I've been told by many people in the industry. most are fine dining tho.

this is just my thought but i think it depends on the hourly pay of server.if its a low paying job great give them a tip.but when they go home with 200 dollars a night plus in tips plus their wage i dont leave a large tip.

But how would you know what they take home each night before you are seated and served?

Yeah and that's really getting too much into what they make and their business anyway...Has nothing to do with the quality of the service they provide.

I double the tax. In CA, that's about a 20% tip. If they give bad service, I tip $2, if I feel any attitude was given, I leave a penny. I find leaving a penny is more insulting that not leaving a tip.

I used to tip a penny when i got bad service. But now I think its a lot more fun to draw a middle finger in the signature box when they bring me my credit card slip to sign.
