How much electricity is my tank using?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Jeez little man, tough crowd. I'll give you a hand but you can do it! That should show them your ethics is good.

Leccy is sold by the kilowatt hr. What you pay for a kilowatt hr should be on your bill. 1 KW/Hr is the amount of leccy 1000 watts of fishy equipment uses in 1 hour.

To work out how much leccy your equipment is using, find how many watts it is, turn that into kilowatts, ie 250 watts will be 0.250 kilowatts. You just divide by 1000.

Then work out how many hours you use it for. So for the lights thats 4 hrs a day, 4 * 365 = 1460 hrs a year.

Now if your lights were 250 watts like the heater the cost would be:

Cost = (kilowatts power) * (time switched on) * (cost of a kilowatt)

= 0.250 * 1460 * 0.10 (10p for us, look on your bill)

= £36.50 a year to run the lights.

If you want it per month just divide the cost by 12. Do this for all your pumps lights and heaters and you'll know what everything costs and have a good idea of where is best to make your savings. You may be best keeping two tanks, and only lighting them when you want to look at the fish as some above suggested.

The most difficult thing is going to be guessing how often your heater is running for...Do you have central heating in your house? If your house is a constant temperature, you can calculate the cost of the heater in a different way.

My setups consume a lot of electricity...my bill is crazy...

One way I save electricity is by having all my lights on timers...they all come on at night for 4 hours max...some even less.

It is the only time I am home anyway and they turn of automatically in case I forget.

You can also save electricity other ways...not only by cutting down costs on your aquarium but by limiting the electric consumption of other household accessories.

lol little man, im in college, i commute to school which is why i live at home. And lazy? I have a 3.6 cumulative and a 4.0 Major GPA. Job hunting is for the summer when my school load is not that heavy. SO, until then i need a way to save some money for my parents. ;]

Thanks king edward for the info =] ill try to calculate it

btw wat made everyone assume that i was a little kid? haha dang i know i look young, but do i sound young as well? =P

o ya and i bought all my tanks with my money from temp jobs i had... lol sounds like someone hates kids

Also, my parents do not know that im thinking about taking a tank down =]

I would think a conputer would use way more elect than a filter, I would limit my time on the internet and put the monitor/ computer on sleep mode. turn off the light on aquarium as much as possible and take colder showers, that will more than make up for the cost to run a xp3. :)

Sorry Dude, I assumed when they were calling you little man they knew who you were! On my indoor pond I have a 125w pump running 2 filter/grow tubes. To save on the leccy I have the pump on a timer, it runs 15mins on 15mins off. Its been going quite a while now (9 months?) with no probs. Then its placed by the window so the plants are grow with natural light, I only put the lights on when I'm looking at the fish....

The other thing I'm planning is insulating three sides of all my aquariums cause being a cold country it should have a big effect... Not much help in LA though!

And i would be willing to bet the only reason this kid is on here talking about this is because his parents got on him about the tanks. And instead of doing some research to make his decision he took the easy way out and asks the board.

geez you are being harsh.. he did not say his parents said he HAD to, he said he MIGHT take down a tank to help his parents out.

and apparently you would have lost that bet.

Great idea and good work.

As an aside, people probably thought, as I did, that you were a little kid because (1) a college student should be able to figure something as trivial as you asked via googling, and (2) the way your phrase sentences is lacking. Lord knows I do my share of run-ons, but there's a difference.

Anyways, best of luck on the summer job hunt!
