Very nutritious. Just beware of the source. You don't want chemicals.

Good point..........Being a PA state licensed applicator I can tell you this much -many people use restricted commercial pre-emergence
such as snapshot-preen-freehand or showcase to stop weed germination in both lawns and ornimental beds.
Warning labal states - "do not use near water sources or enviormental bodies of water or ponds or food supplies." This is because these products create a micro film inside the gills of fish stopping the transfer of oxygen ,thus killing them. These products are also absorbed into fruits vegatables. I'm not 100% sure about earthworms.

People also use 2-4-D products such as trimec D to remove unwanted broadleaf weeds from their turf and merit for grub and beetle control.
Even worse they'll use a product called seven which is a non-selective (kills everything that breaths) Insecticide.

Although I believe Balton about washing out the dirt, is the risk really worth the reward.

WORMS ARE GREAT FOR YOUR FISH. IN THE WILD THEY DONT CLEAN THE WORMS OR CUT THEM UP. TOO MUCH UNNEEDED WORK IF YOU ASK ME. I WOULD BE CAREFUL AS TO WHERE YOU PROCURE YOUR WORMS AS SOMEONE ELSE SAID EARLIER DUE TO CHEMICALS. I HAVE A AREA OUT BACK THAT I BURY SCRAPS OF FOOD IN(BANANNA PEELS, FOOD LEFTOVEERS, ETC.) I WAIT A COUPLE OF DAYS AND ITS LOADED WITH FAT JUICY WORMS. WINTERMONTHS I USE THE ONES @WAL-MART OR ANY OTHER PLACE FISHING WORMS ARE CHEAP.

I've fed earthworms and red wigglers for years. Whole and torn to pieces.

I get them from my bait store and from my yard (I don't use fertilizer or pesticide).

I'm thinking about setting up a worm bin to both produce live food for the fish and consume veggie waste (vs. a landfill).

I actually don't wash out the dirt. I feed them the nightcrawlers dirt and all. My fish spit the dirt out on their own.

I'm surprised at the low protein content in shrimp.

I feed earthworms to all my fish and turtles. They add a little variety to the diet. But like mentioned make sure you dig them from a safe area that was never sprayed with pesticides/herbicides.
