How overstocked am i now?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How long have you had this setup? I'm guessing if you wait a couple weeks there will be some major aggression coming from the Geo because its over stocked.

I believe you said you liked the Geo, Severums, and Acaras?
Since you don't want to get rid of those, keep the Geo, Severums, Acaras, and the dithers, and get rid of everything else.

IMO, I think that's what should minimally be done to reduce stress in the long run.

Just my opinion.

Ive had this set up for 2 years, the Geo has been in there for 6 months, the big Sev 2 years, the rest in the last 2 years at different times.

I still dont believe that Geophagus Brasiliensis is in anyway aggressive...i'll guess i have to wait and see, everyone but this site says they are one of the most timid cichlid of its size and mine makes me think no different.

I'm going to play it by ear and remove the Angels,Kribensis (<is there any point?) and the Rainbow.

I may part ways with the Latifrons as its not as pretty as the Pulcher.

Did a bit of rehoming now and my stock is...

3 x Severum
1 x Festivum
2 x Blue Acara
1 x Pearl Eartheater
2 x Angel Fish
6 x rainbowfish
3 x Clown Loach

How does it sound now?

It is the cichlids thats the problem isent it? not the stocking as a whole? (tank looks really empty now!)

I still feel that with that list the angels could get picked on by the more aggressive geo brasiliensis

What site says brasiliensis are timid? They not the most aggressive fish in the world or anything but definately can hold there own. Yours may never be a problem aggression wise (every fish is a little different) but the fact that they get huge is a problem for your small tank. When it does get full grown I think you will see why we are telling you it's to aggressive for your other fish. Because a full grown one will claim the whole tank as it's territory.

Like I said, not the most aggressive fish in the world but definately the most aggressive fish in your tank. Everything might seem great now but either aggression or nitrates will eventually catch up to you.

a 11" fish in a 4ftx2ftx2ft is not to small at all man.

If they say 75g is needed for a Oscar, which gets bigger than a Brasiliensis by far in length, width and depth then there is no way a 100g is to small for a Brasiliensis.

Plenty of sites say it,look it up man. (about the aggression)

Again I'm not bothered about rehoming the Angels later on,there's far to much empty space in there now to get rid when i don't need to.

I don't know anyone that has kept brasiliensis including myself that would consider them timid. Mine was pretty nippy and would harrase less aggressive tankmates constantly. The problem isn't with a lone 11" fish. The problem is with 3 severums that will get 8-10", 2 blue acara that will get 8", 1 brasiliensis that will get 11" and so on.

Right now you are probably fine because they are small. When they get bigger or if you start having nitrate or aggression issues remove fish as needed. If it works now don't mess with it. I'm just explaining why everyone is telling you to get rid of the brasiliensis. I never said a lone fish was going to be to much for your tank. The oscar recommendation in a 75g is for a lone fish. Your brasiliensis is hardly alone. I would also never recommend an oscar for a 75g, so I may tend to try to understock somewhat.

If you read my post in the first place you would see I said 'timid in comparison to similar sized fish'.

meaning they are not as temperamental as say a Oscar or a Red Devil.

And as far as the Nitrates thing,I'm over filtering using 2 external filters (Fluval 406's) as i mentioned previously.

i also do 20% water changes twice a week.

Also talking of aggression A fuly grown Severum is similar size to a Oscar,I very much doubt it would have a problem with a fish that looks like a over sized Firemouth.
