So this put the top of the tank at 7.5 to 8 feet:confused:

Yeah, he used it in a basment as a filter for another tank, put it 8 feet high, then it flowed to another tank beneath it and ran return hoses through holes in his floor to the upstairs tank. Most impressive home setup ive ever seen.

This tank is going into my basement home gym so I'm never really sitting there in front of it. Finished basement has tile floor which makes life easier. All the pics provided have encouraged me to go for the tall tank.

My only other tank is a 90 gallon african community tank in my family room. That tank is eye level with anyone sitting on a couch watching tv etc. and works at average height.

For me stands are only too tall when they are too wide to fit through a door. In many cases you can simply carry it through vertical due to a smaller tank width. But if you lack french doors and have a 36" front door then your 8x3 foot print stand can't be more than 32" tall to reasoinably navigate it out. I just hate having to take a stand apart to get it outside when moving. If that doesn't bother you then there's no such thing as too tall.

good point. if your stand is welded steel tubing, you can't really get it apart..

always make sure your monster tank and or stand can be fit through a door..

there was a post on this forum (or another I can't remember) of a person who bought a 340g acrylic tank only to realize he/she could not get it into their house..:(

I build most of the finished stands at about 31". I did have my 125 at about 60" or so for a while, but I lowered it when I replaced the stand.

When I built my steel stand for my 500, I did it was 40", and the tank is 48" tall. I need a 6 foot ladder to do maintenance, but it makes a great visual appeal, and plenty of room below for filters, storage. Also the perfect height for a breakfast bar...which I am considering as part of skinning it.
