In my 1200 gallon tank i put in 8 Discus some time back. I do not think that they come to their right in there, so i want them out again. But with all the driftwood and amount of volume to hide in, its easyer said then done. Does anyone have any ideas? I am thinking at night, when the lights have bin off for a few houres and the fish are at sleep. Any input on this would be appriciate. A divider is not really an option here.

Get your hook, rod and worm ready! Or a carrot under a box propped up with a stick that has a string tied to it. :p

I've never owned such a big tank but the only thing I could think of is removing all the decorations and using multiple nets at once and maybe someone else with multiple nets. I hate when fish are so elusive. Your initial idea of the lights out will help but as soon as you kick on the lights you have a small window before they are in full swing again. Maybe get some night vision goggles? That could prove very useful in application for this project among others non fish related. :D

I dont plan on turning the lights on :) I think of using flashlight, and just swing it by every now and then to see where my nets at :) I have no clue how to do this, those driftwood pieces are MASSIVE! I had a hard time getting them in when they were not wet, and no water in the tank, so taking them out = Not gonna happen :p If i have to leave the Discus in there, il just have to do so, but i would love to get them out :) They dont shine as the diamonds they are in there.

I would say get a large net and do what you said with the lights off. It seems much more probable than using hooks to catch your prized fish. So get a large net, if you dont want to spend a lot more money then you should on it, go to a fishing shop and pick up a small holed net. Then get yourself up on a chair or something that you trust not to fall on and try to go around the perimeter of you tank with the net with the lights off. Or if you are willing to, go swimming with the discus and do the same I just mentioned.

I got a suggestion which I did years back. I draw out most of the water in the tank into other container to hold them. When the water is low enough for me to net the fish out easily, I finish the catch and pump back the water into the tank from those holding containers.

While my tank is nowhere near that large, its still large enough with enough decor to make catching fish a p.i.t.a.

I've tried a few different things and honestly the easiest, best working one is to have another friend help you wrangle them up. When the fish flee from your friends net, it will make them that much easier to catch them in yours.

Honestly the catching them in the dark thing is for the birds; as soon as they catch on that your netting them out, they take off in every direction and unless you can see in the dark, it only helps them evade you (ime).

Awesome tank btw.
