How to fiberglass Plywood Tank?

TWO different animals...
Fiberglass lamination becomes part of the tank structure. If done correctly the wooden tank under the fiberglass could deteriorate and the tank would still be there...

Pond Armor is a coating, a sealing medium if you will...
The structure in which it is applied has to be able to support the finnish. It may add a little bit of strenght, but it's intention is to seal not laminate...
 
I got a free sample of the pond armor and it looks to be a great sealer finish, and it comes in colors too, no fumes, and is non-toxic basically from the start...

I also have laid fiberglass in the fishholds of commercial boats I've worked on. After the fiberglass cured it is tough as nails...
 
Great thread. If there isnt already an article or a sticky on the basics of fiberglassing a tank this one may be a great starter.

Also- Always wear a respirator to block those fumes! Your brain, liver and lungs will thank you for it.
 
www.fiberglassforums.com. Read the newbie section and you'll be set. Try a test piece before you go at the real thing. Fiberglass is not hard, but it takes a bit of learning.

zennzzoo, thanks so much for the link iv spent a couple hours googling around to find something to that effect but couldnt, lol. ITS PERFECT, and not to expensive (aquatic eco systems).... Does the kit come complete? when i order it from them.?

and how should i prep the fiberglass for that epoxy? just somesanding and cleaning?

I dont know anything about that pond armor, but i do know im sticking to fiberglass!
 
I just took a ride over to napa. I didnt get the brand(its in a blue and white container) but they have a gallon of epoxy resin for $59.99. With my discount its $39.99. is this a bad deal?

I know theres a "bondo" brand, thats originally $49.99, i dont know the discount on that but its probably cheaper then the other stuff, lol.

should i just get the bondo brand?
 
Don't use bondo brand crap!

I'd recommend trying a marine supply place or an industrial plastics place as well. Typically they have stuff that's no t been on the shelf for very long, so it's working life is much better.

Yeah, I'm going to do something like your project before summer hits...remember to plumb all your fittings before glassing it in...It'll make things alot easier down the road...
