How to on temporary houseing for fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
okay, can anyone give me some more info on the 4' cube tank things, I have never heard of them, but that sounds perfect. Where would I find one, approx. cost, ect...

The kiddie pool would be perfect, except that it can't go outside, we're in nebraska and it's freaking cold outside right now, and I can't put it in the house and trust the kids. My kids are sneaky little buggers, and I can see one of them distracting me so the other one can jump in the pool to play with the fishies :irked:

See if there are any local (as far as your willing tod drive) restaurant suppliers (food) tell them what your looking for and see if they have one or can direct you.

Used fiberglass bath tub?

Or build a small cube and put a liner in it, then make a hinged top with screen so the kids can't " fall " in. :grinno:

we're going to try the kiddie pool idea in the laundry room + a baby gate, see how that goes, if it doesn't work we're going to do the plywood box+liner+"lid"

is there any way I can make a HOB work on the pool so I don't have to go out and buy a pump? and how can I use my heaters in it, I don't want them to melt the plastic (if they even would) but it has to be fully submersed...

would an air driven sponge filter work okay, if it was large enough and I put a couple of them in there?

sponge filters are great. I guess it depends how messy your catfish is. 2-4 hydro 5's would probably filter it OK for temp. usage.

You could also make a little structure that sits inside your tank to hang the HOB on, as long as the motor does not get wet. submersible pumps are cheap if you get an off-brand one from ebay. Since it's only a temp usage, you wouldn't need a pump that will last for years and years.

I'll look into the pumps, but I have a bunch of sponges I can use. If that can't keep up with them, then I will look into a pump to use in midnight's 5 gallon bucket idea

for the heater would it be okay to suction cup it to a pie plate, or something similar and put that on the bottom in the middle of the pool?

well it's all done, and there were no leaks in the pool, so I threw the fish in there
put a heater on the bottom of a casserole dish and submersed that, and I have an ac110 on a small rubbermaid container running, and I will be adding sponge filters to that in a few days (I've been working on fish for too long today now).

my camera is no longer cooperating, it's nothing special to look at but if someone wants pics I can take them with my phone

thanks all for the help!

See, if we leave you to your own ends you can do it .

I'm glad you went with a glass casserole dish for the heaters.

To clean it (the "pond") get a small plastic vacuum head (real one) (when the wife isn't looking) and hook a syphon hose to it and vacuum the bottom. Make sure there are no sharp edges of course.

And of course you gotta send pix! :D

will do on the pictures tomorrow...I am the wife, so the vacuum is fair game :grinyes: and my fishies look much happier with some room to swim. Now it's just keeping the kids out of it....this will be the interesting part :)
