How to remove 100lbs of sand from a tank?

i just use a tuperware/bowl and scoop it out...the fastest and easyest way...i have moved hundreds and hundreds of lbs of sand and gravel this way...then after 99% is out you can syphon the little out that is left...the only way to do it imo...use your net to push the sand to one side of the tank and to move your rays to the other side so you can get the sand from one condensed spot...

I have removed sand using large fine nets. Remove the large decor, then net it out straining water as you go.
Then siphon the remaining that you can't get with a net.

I've done this a few times. I always use a 30 gal trash can on a dolly when doing water changes. I set a 5 gal bucket in the trash can and use a hose to siphon the sand into the 5 gal bucket. Most of the sand will stay in the bucket while the trash can fills up. The hose I use is about 1/2" id, and the sand comes out fast. I never have removed all the sand at once, usually over the course of a week or so. Start at one end of the tank and work towards the opposite end. The rays do move some sand around, but it's easy enough to push it back into the remaining pile. A lot less messy than trying to scoop the sand out, plus you can do water changes at the same time.

When adding new sand, I wash a small amount well first in a small bucket and then use a cup to add it to the tank.

alright then how do i put the new sand in? same way? dump on one side while the rays are on the other side, then switch them around?

i just use the same tub i scooped it out with to add sand...lower it in slowly as to not mix it up in the water column...just dump all over the ray will most likely leave you alone while you are doing this to one side...then after you start twards them the will go to the new sand and hide...atleast that is what mine do...i have changed sands a few times now with my rays...

i have used nets also...the problem i have with them is the bend and rip due to the weight of the sand...i still use them to move the sand to one side of the tank..they leave the cleanest bottom during the slide...

lucky for me i have a long enough hose that reaches out my window and to the bathroom sink at the same time so the only pain is switching it from window to faucet.

To add new sand use a 2 or 3" piece of pvc pipe. Just pour it down the pipe and move the pipe around to distribute. Of course this assumes you have rinsed your sand properly.

If you get 1.5-2 inch hose from Lowes or home depot you can siphon out the sand in no time at all. Remove all other decor and push the sand over best you can. This diameter hose will work real fast.
