How to tell Retroculus Xinguensis from Lapidifer at 2"?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've found that Geos tend to like smaller pellets because it allows them to sift them. I feed 1mm NLS pellets to my 4 - 5" geos. They don't seem to chew them as long as they do with larger pellets. They also tend to spit out larger pellets unless they're really soft. I'm guessing Retros would react similarly. I'd feed the smaller pellets and they may be more willing to take them as they're sifting.

Yea your right about the smaller pellets. my 4-5 inch altifrons eat 2mm nls quick but if i throw in some 3mm for my severum they just sift them through their gills.

Keep your eyes peeled in a few months.....that is all I have to say ;)

Mark, you da man! I'm just hoping the xinguensis I got from you follow the lead of the lapidifers in the pellet training department. So far they are eating bloodworms and brine, but they are definitely watching the lapidifers devour the pellets. The lapidifers eat anything, ANY BRAND!

Thanks for the info, what were the growth rates that you got? And what were you feeding?

They grew from 2" to the size stated in a few months, they were fed on a fairly typical mix of crustaceans, insect larvae, chopped earthworm, Spectrum, quality flake foods etc.
On the few early times I fed them to repletion I didn't like the way they then just sat on the substrate like me after a curry, didn't look natural for fish like that to have rounded bellies, hence I changed the amount and frequency.

What was the size stated? I must have missed this.
