how's my form?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I put up 335 5 times. If you want to get stronger put a little more weight on there and do less reps.

Definitely. 5 reps

get on a good strength program and start eating like a pig and watch your squat, dl, bench and bw go up. im at 105x5 @ 79 bw. dont know what that is in pounds lol

Like i said in the first line, people make excuses for not doing the FULL RANGE OF MOTION. I've been working out for years and have never experienced pain from doing a full, true press, nor have been told it was wrong (by experienced bodybuilders) once. What your saying could be said about doing nearly every exercise with alot of weight. The risk of hurting yourself is ALWAYS there, but with proper form and a good spotter like the OP demonstrates it can help prevent injuries.

To true. its like when people dont squat below parallel

I watched the video for first time, thats a good bench. I got myself up to 267 and benched 460 earlier this year, my goal was 500 but I missed that. I go all the way down when I bench, I use more of a close grip, tuck my shoulders in and dont flare out my elbows. I do know this, the bigger a guy you are, means you got a thicker body so when you bench, you dont bench the full range of motin as a smaller guy does. Which in turn makes it easier. Now Im not saying anything bad about heavy lifters but it is easy. I got on the squat rack and used the bars that you can adjust for whatever exercise you are doing such as shrugs, etc. I put on 530lbs, went down about 8-10" and pushed it back up. Now I couldnt have done that to my chest. I did have a lot of onlookers watchin me so that got my adrenaline going and I hate to fail to I had to do it. Anyways, it felt good and I sure did feel afterwards. From my experience, if you are a lifter for a long period of time, the bigger you are, the thicker your chest is, the easier you will have it when comin to the bench, Ive seen it over and over and over again.

I'm at 238lbs and I rarely go over 315lbs but I do 4 sets of 15-10-10 and then whatever I can get. Im still over the 400lb bench but I dont have a spotter and hate to bother people so I just do what I know what I can do safely and be happy with it :)

And let me tell you something else, you see those folks that dont bench all the way, squat all the down or deadlift from the floor, what you make call as cheating or not doing it right, for the most part is BS, except for the kids that are in there that dont know what they are doing, but doing 1/4 squats or 1/4 benches, etc., all of that is putting that person in place for a larger lift down the road, if you are going 1/4 of the way down on the bench for a month, over time you will gradually start to get lower and lower to where now you are touching your chest. This is a great way to get your weight up fast, as I have done this myself. So it does work, some folks approach it differently than others, what works for someone may not work for someone else.

So explain to me how for the most part it's B.S. to train your muscle in the full range of motion?? To get the absolute most out of a lift by going to and past the "sticking point" that many lifters are simply afraid of? OK, different strokes for different folks apparently. Btw doing 1/4 squats and 1/4 benches are known as lockouts, but i'm sure you already knew that. Yes they will help your max out if you do them frequently over time. And as far as going 1/4 of the way down on a lift, why not cut the true B.S. and go ALL the way down from the get-go? You are literally cutting your workout by 25-50 percent by stopping at a 1/2 or 1/4 (think about it). Who's to say that someone will GRADUALLY get lower and lower in time, they will likely just form a habit of stopping 1/2 or 3/4 of the way down and say thats good enough. And finally when it comes to getting your weight up fast, you can only do about 20-30 percent of that in the weightroom the other 70-80 percent is through sleep and in the kitchen eating healthy, but i'm sure you already knew that too.

Look around in the gym, you going to tell me that you or any of your friends have ever made fun of someone not doing what you think is the right way to exercise? Like you said different strokes for different folks, but let me tell you, this is how I managed to bench what I bench today. Yes I know what lockouts are, Ive done them for years, the most I have ever lifted with a range of about 5" was 640lbs, I bring the bar down each time and the weight slides as well but this has helped me too. Now on the bench, I did this somewhat the same but with a spotter and lighter weight. When I wasnt able to actually bench a full 315 in full range, I made my self feel the weight, bring it off the bar, go down a few inches, do that a few times. Next round go down a little farther and over time you will be at your chest and able to do a full range of motion bench. I also performed other bench press while repping out 225lbs, doing super sets, dumbbells, etc.

The fly machine, I remember I wasnt able to do the full stack of 300lbs, I had to cheat by leaning forward, well over time I found myself not leaning forward anymore, back on the pad, now I do the 300lbs stack plus I add the two 8lb rubber weights plus I add a 45lb plate to the stack with a weight pin I made, so again, it does work if you stick with it.

I also said you will see folks in there that dont know what they are doing, they look around and watch other folks which can be good or bad, now if that person see another guy benching 1/4 or 1/2, he may think thats the correct way to bench all the time, what he doesnt know is what the other guy knows. Then you just got the guys that want to act cool, toss a bunch of weight on the bar and do the same thing by going down 1/2 way and thinking he just accomplished something when in fact, he doesnt know what he is doing. So for the most part, it is BS.

I guess I have to say, I know that as well, I didnt go to McDonalds and becomes a lard *** just to bench a lot. Im lactose intolerant so I cant eat or drink what a lot of other folks can eat. So I drink Carnivor protein, which put the weight on me, fast. I mostly also eat boneless chicken breasts as well, stay away from red meat and at a lot of salads and vegies, so yea, I know that too.

I have watched many idiots in the gym over the years. I remember the last guy to come in, I called him mini conan. He was tiny, but looked dang good. He thought he could lift the world, every single time he came in. He would toss on a bunch of weight, and this time he didnt want to use the clips because he said he could lift it. So as he is benching, as he is going down, I can see where this is headed, his left arm drops, the weights slide of and the bar flips to the other side almost taking out the lady on the bench next to him. All he did was laugh at the situation, he did this twice, on bench and squat.

I also meant to say isnt BS in my original post, had to re-read it. Cheating does help, as well as not doing full range of motion. I am also injury free.

how many of you here are stronger than me? lol

Just now watched your video, you did very good, kept your rear on the seat even to the last rep, I did see you lift your foot at least once, remember to always keep that foot on the ground. Tuck your feet in towards the bench some and use your legs to power you through the bench. Also, I see that you flare out your elbows, if I was you, I would keep them tucked in as close to your body as possible, you are small enough to do this so I would give it a try. It will keep you from tearing anything in your shoulders. You are going to have folks tell you different but I saw first hand, I heard a small SNAP and the guys shoulder dropped along with some of the weight since it caught the spotter off guard. What I do, I pull my feet in to the bench, lay on the bench and roll my shoulders back onto the pad, I usually have my hands at shoulder width or a little wider and then I press it.

Another good way to help your bench, do close grip bench, try to grip the bench as close as you can in the middle of the bar, I like to have my hands touching each other, this may be to close for some folks because it may put too much strain on your wrist and it doesnt feel good at all. I would rep these out as many as you can, dont forget the dumbells, those are very important as well, helps to work your stabilizer muscles more than a bench press does because your arms are isolated with their own weight and you can over compensate to help you press it like you can on the bench. I see a lot of guys when benching that have a really weak arm and the bar is uneven, these folks need to hit the dumbells to help them correct that.

After reading your thread this afternoon, I was feeling dang good at the gym so I decided to bench today, I repped out 315lbs 12 times, then went to incline and repped it 315lb 4 times and then declined 365lbs 11 times, I should have went over 405lb but the gym was dead, my buddy spotted me for a minute but then he left, I weighed in at 235lbs so Im around 230 in the morning. Its hard to keep the bench press up when losing weight.

In high school I did that ts

I wieghed 145-150 lbs

Maxed out on bench at 295

Right now, after a good stretch and warm up I can still hit 250. Been over 7-8 years since I lifted weights
