Huge Gator Gar

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I grew up(so far) cattle ranching in south Florida. We had tons of ponds and creeks on our 2000 acre ranch and we usually ate everything we caught. However, I would usually just keep the smaller fish. Like 1-3 pound channel cats and 14-18" largemouth bass. I'd feel bad if I killed anything larger because it's lived a long life and when it dies I believe it deserves to die naturally. I rarely see far above two feet. And that goes for longnose and gator gar too. We have them in our creeks and there're not difficult to spot and identify. Usually we don't mess with gars any way but I'd love to see the species become more common in different states. Gator gar used to found almost every where in the US including up north like Ohio. Maybe they might be common in Texas but not through out the country like they used to be.
