Huge rattler caught and killed in FL

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I agree what a shame to kill such an old and magnificent snake. Any zoo would have taken it .

I wonder if the trapper did not have the correct equipment .

They use a long pole that extends up to 12 feet with "plastic claw" on end and closes on the snakes head, etc than place it plastic pail and relocate it (I saw some guy who is sometimes on tv use it last year)

This guy may have not had either thus snake was killed.

It should be mandatory for every trapper to have certain equipment but this state doesnt care.

Sadly due to increase in gated communities around prime snake areas more snakes will be killed.

lol you and me both.

1. Person A- "That's the biggest one I've ever seen"
Person B- "Yup, sure is"
Person A- "Better kill it"
Person B- "Sure had"

2. Last time I saw a large snake in the newspaper it was an impossibly large 400 pound burmese, that was more like 200 pounds. In this story - "The snake has already shrunk in size". I'm sure it has. People wanting 15 mins of fame, media want their BS story. Maybe I'm too cynical,

I to have become cynical and the news told the story like the snake went in that gated community looking for trouble.

"Its goal was to go after humans . It had to be destroyed. The snake was bad for being so big as any rattle snake that big surely is out to kill people "

I have met 2 trappers here one you sometimes see on tv and both had the equipment to grab that snake from some distance right away and no harm done.
Trapping here is growing due to more houses by wild areas but the trappers themselves though licensed arent regulated as far as equipment they must have .

You can catch it and relocate it or bash its head in with a club (only Indigo you must relocate) .

I came across a snake like that on Honey Moon Island on the other side of the state. There are dozens of snakes that size in the little park. It took about 5 minutes for it to cross the path I was on. These snakes know they can kill anything and the don't hesitate to loaf around because the can!

Nice that must be some sight.

I have never seen any rattler here over 12 inches. Have seen lots this summer by Glades area I go fishing but again only little one's.

Is there anything that would be a predator to a rattler the size that you saw ?. Other than gator.

This happened in FL.. you can't really expect whoever responded to deal with the situation like a rational type human. Especially in matters where the opportunity presented itself to kill something.

He said he got his gig which I think is the tong thing.

Also I'm pretty sure the Eastern D-back is a threatened species, critically so if I recall.

A gig is a gig - not tongs

and no, their is no protection for EDBs in Floriduh.............

Reminds me of lake placid
They found a huge croc and they found the need to kill it

just because there scared of a lil snake.
Well in lake placid the croc was like 40 feet long.

I dont see why people cant NOT kill an animal who is just living and happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. What gives us the right to kill something?
Threaten our kids? Bull****.
Maybe Obama should invest money in schools to teach kids about venomus reptiles.
Some are actually quite friendly.
Well The gila i held was
I guess im just very very drunk.

All in all.
Killing a gorgeous animal isnt always the answer.

WATCH OUT THAT REDFOOT TORTOISE CAME RIGHT AT YOU, SHOOT IT
