Humble Beginnings?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
my grandpa turned me into a fishing fanatic and a semi-pro. once you start catching fish, the next step was to keep them and study and enjoy them.

i went over to my freinds house when i was 8. they had a ton of tanks and i wanted one for X-mas. so my dad bought me a 20gallon setup. we got a maple stand and a cover. I still have all setup now. i have some of the original fish in it.

First tank I ever bought was a 150g - I sure started small :P Currently it's stocked w/ the same standard LFS fish (mollies, guppies, snails etc..) From when I got it!

I always had fond memories of wasting my summer away as a kid by leaning on the chair and watching a school of neon's swim around. So when I got out on my own I decided to get my own tank.

Plus - I did the math behind monthly aquarium vs television costs. The fish came out cheaper :D (No TV for me)

Our family is well known to get into a new hobby on a large scale in a short time. fish-keeping was another one of our phases but I was the only one who stuck with it. My dad got a 125 bow front and a 90 gallon, both saltwater. He got my sister a 25 bow saltwater. I told him I wanted nothing to do with saltwater so he got me 20 gallon freshwater with RBP.
Obviously that didn't last long, after that I started buying my own tanks, after my third tank he told me I couldn't have any more. So now I keep a 30 at my mom's house and a 120 at my friends. :naughty:
Need less to say there was a long period between those first 3 tanks when I spent alot of time learning on how to properly care for my fish. I found MFK just before my 3rd tank and is still my best source when I can't figure something out.

My friend gave me a shoal of redbellies and a 55gal glass tank. It all took off from there! I've probably had 10 tanks and a hundred fish since then including some large cichlids.

Before he gave me the tank and fish, I didn't really realize there was more to fishkeeping than dumb goldfish, which I still hate.

If anyone ever has a tank and some fish they don't really want, give it to a friend!

I've always been intrigued by exotic pets, reptiles and fish especially. My uncle offered me a 55 gallon tank when I was probably 9 and I took care of it along with my 10-15 snakes and lizards by myself. I started liking fish then but started liking monsters when I caught a couple sauger at the stream and thought how cool it would be to keep one.

when i was little ( about 8) my dad decided to get a fish tank for us because we wanted a pet, so that was his easiest solution lol, but i really liked having a tank (even though it was a 10G tank =P) and when we moved, and i got older, we got a few more tanks, and i've enjoyed this hobby since i was little, still do. started out with one 10G which brought me to a 10G 55G and 90G, but i sold the 90 since, and now im down to a 10 55 and 30, maybe ill set up a 45 though. =)
