I've got a large sponge, and a power head; steering away from canisters, as I am not too keen on them.
I'm more about the scape and plants, so I'm hoping the minnows won't have too heavy a bioload, along with a bunch of cherry shrimp I'll add in future
When I was doing planted briefly I found that water changes were really only for adding back trace elements, as my nitrates were all consumed by the plants as far I could tell. I'm guessing you'll experience something similar.
Yup, also more for the gravel; I don't plan on rigourously siphoning it, to disturb further plants
My short time with plants i didnt gravel vac at all. Just changed out water
You want to know my favorite thing about your planted tanks? The all seem to contain white clouds! Such an underrated fish IMO. Prove them all wrong, show them how beautiful these tiny common fish can be!!!

lol I intend to
some of the minnows are from my planted tank, which I recently broke down; as my gf will be moving in with her cats, and I thought I'd avoid a disaster
I also don't have to run a heater with the white clouds, so I have less bills and no worries about frying them to death
I was tempted to do a shoal of neons, not gonna lie; but they're pretty fragile I find compared to the white clouds, plus I just like white clouds lol
This might sound silly, but do your normal ones school with your gold ones? I know my "black" black widows hang with my gold black widows, are the minnows the same?
nah not silly at all
I find they do shoal, though when they are comfortable they tend to go off exploring individually 
I love aquascaped tanks but i am getting fancy goldfish for my 70 gal but with my comets that are in there temporarily i removed the gravel so much vaccing, so no aquascape for me
