I think thats lame... When something is that big and that old you should admire and respect it, even if you're a hunter. Hes like a dinosaur.

Some people just dont have the humanity to grasp that concept. They'll come up with a million righteous excuses why its necessary for them to kill magnificent animals, its sickening.

hunting, yet again, is neccessary. Yeah we are building farther and farther out but look at our population. Its massive.

Try to tell a relative of mine, no need for population control. They have lost multiple harvests to deer. Wasnt even worth harvesting cause deer had eatten so much. crop damage permit and a bunch of meat later, and it was under control. still alot of deer and plenty of lost crop but at least they got some.

ahh didnt realise that this was taken so far back. disregard.

Do you really think nature needs gung-ho animal killing humans to regulate animal populations?

If deer or other animal populations are out of control it is because of human interference, the argument that hunters help nature is completely false.

its over. its done with end of story lol.

no seriously i see no problem with hunting animals. we as humans have been doing it for a LONG time and people will be doing it a LONG time after msot of us are gone. as long as they are using all of the animal i see nothing wrong with it.

now if this guy was going out and setting tons of traps and killing numerous large gators than yes i would say we have a problem. But he took one big gator. Its not going to be the end of the world. life will go on.

I have to say Im shocked, I opened this thread and the last person I expected to agree with 100% was LP lol. But you hit the nail on the head. This was a awesome creature but this kinda stuff has to happen for our own safety.

I agree with this. Like I said, there are plenty of gators to hunt and I am okay with hunting so long as it is done responsibly and I feel like this was a responsible kill albeit a shame (just because I would love to see one like this alive first...)

lol, Im sorry, but I have to laugh. Were you joking? So we have to go deep into remote animal habitats to kill dangerous animals for our safety, good grief that is horrible reasoning.

I am just going say this, I am originally from Louisiana and grew up smack dabbed in the Atchafalya Basin which is some of the most unaltered swampland in North America and even it has the stamp of man every where. Secondly being from there I have seen the end result of what not hunting Gators can do, there was a point in the mid 80's when one could not even step outside without seeing 5-6 Gators just sitting in your Front Yard because hunting was banned. It also got this bad in Florida, and hunting was re-established because of how quickly Gators were over populating in areas and posing a threat. This is all well documented and I am surprised that for a site full of reptile experts this fact hasn't been brought up let.

Thats all fine and great, but killing this gator will not reduce the population as someone pointed out already. As the alpha male of his territory, HE kept the gator population in check. Its a mute point regardless, as hunters just use the population argument as an excuse, their motivation is hunting and killing, not population control.

I wouldn't say that their motivation is just hunting and killing, many do depend on Gator hunting as part of their yearly paycheck and some just harvest a few a year for food. I am not going to lie, I love reptiles, but I am Cajun and grew up eating both Gators and Turtles and still do and when I am home I go out with my Dad who is still very much into living of the land and trap them for food. Personally hunting them is what lead me too care for Reptiles and their survival, you gain a new appreciation for them when your out in the middle of no where and see how they live and its a part of my life I don't want to disappear and want to share with my daughter, so I care very much that they survive in the wild so I can do that.
