rallysman-but do you keep fish to belong in a club or because you TRULY like the fish?

I don't belong to any club.
I keep fish because I enjoy them. I chose to distance myself from clubs because of the attitude that is commonly conveyed.

you basically described it for me. I like FISH. I haven't done any documented research, but last time I checked hybrid fish are still fish.
I don't care what the fish is, where it came from, who it's daddy is, or if it's "pure". I (for the most part) enjoy the hobby and the fish that are in it.

When I thought I had found a group of people that shared a common interest, I found that no matter what/who the group is, someone is going to make it suck for others.

I'm seriously floored (tanked, at a loss for words, whatever) that some people think that it's immoral to keep one kind of fish, but it's totally acceptable to keep another type in the exact same conditions.

Pardon me, I'm choking on hypocrisy.

Interesting observations, peeps. I still have some reading to do. But just wanted to say, is ANYONE floored that it was me that spearheaded this discussion in the club? Ask the folks who attended the meeting. I'm the guy who kicked the dog. LOL

Cichlids come from the Wild..

Hybrids come from Man..

They should be 2 separate things..

So are you arguing that unless you have verifiably wild fish that you shouldn't be part of the ACA clique?

Aquariums come from man. Like 95% of the fish in the hobby. Man has been developing "improved" versions of fish for aethetics since like 2 AD.

Well then I'll give you credit for that.. because that proverbial dog needs to be kicked really really hard..

You hit the nail on the head. I'm not sure if others feel the same as I do, but I sure as hell don't feel "welcome" in the club. I'm not going to waste my money to try to feel that way either.

Something has to change, or the club will eventually die.

:clap:clap:clap

Exactly what I was saying.. Especially that last sentence..

I couldn't agree more. The rhetoric from these exclusive fish groups gets old. It seems for some the higher you climb up the knowledge tree, the more of a douchebag you become. Count me out of any group, club, association, organization, league, or social network other than MFK. I stayed with MFK because the level of fish snobbery here is the lowest. I hope to learn enough to take excellent care of my animals and get the full enjoyment out of the hobby. I would never look down on anyone for keeping any fish, even a pike cichlid!:WHOA::ROFL: If you think your existence in the fish world is important, take a look around. You're the KING of a very small world.

I can assure you the ACA is not going to die.
It's finances and memberships are at all time highs.
The funds for the Guy Jordan research grants are in 6 figures if I understood the meeting correctly.

This is not about survival of the club at all! This is about the future of the clubs shows and the hobby itself. Both posters saying that the club will die out are very ill-informed of the current status of the club. Also, attendances at the Annual conventions since 2006 have been very high(over 500 people) and the conventions made money.

There has also been very large contributions from the private sector and from fish farms that support the club.

It is mute to argue the thoughts of "Close mindedness" about the ACA elite, if the very same posters admit to not belonging to clubs and supporting the hobby in most basic of levels. The local and national clubs play an intricate part in the formation of this hobby.
It is thru the various clubs world wide that fish have been cultivated, traded, and procured!

There is also a great many lifelong friendships formed by these clubs that would of never wise transpired! I have met some of the greatest people at local clubs Nation-Wide! Their enthusiasm is Bar None!!!

It is also absolutely NOT a waste of money to join an organization and support friends and causes that are hobby related.

Rallysman and Cichlagaupote, I think you are both missing out on great experiences that have not yet happened for you guys. You should try some club involvement. BAP awards are always cool, article submissions, mentoring, auctions(LIVE), friends WITH fish! here is sooo much that I am unable to describe the benefits as each person experiences something different.

As far as some one making things suck for everyone else...Have you read the negative threads thru-out these forums and bulletin boards. It just takes a few negative posts to turn off would be posters from forums. I am always trying to support the ACA and the ACAFORUM.COM but many people say they would rather not post on forums because people flame them. (My statements here is true of all forums, there is always some one negative somewhere) Soooo, To say I would never join a club because of bad attitudes is not fair to the many great clubs out there who really work hard for their members to enjoy something special.

Is a club for everyone? Of course not. But everyone should at least try it once before making decisions against them.

Are there bad clubs out there with poor management that lack foucs? Sure there are. When your local club is failing it takes a special person to step forward and lead them in new directions! (like Mo and these threads!)

Should everyone care about showing their fish in some show? Of course not! But competing for something is fun, and if you are proud of your accomplishments with your fish then showing it off is rewarding also. I love fish shows! It allows me to see some great fish I would otherwise only see in some digital picture somewhere.

Don't get me wrong, I am not against your opinions. Your entitled. I just feel you have not experienced a positive force in the club scene and are missing out. That's all.

Ewurm,
Reread your posts please. I do not see anyone being a Douche bag. No one with knowledge has chimed in and been negative or looked down on anyone. Even in Mo's signature...I like my FH's pan fried with a side of salsa... does not refer to anyone but that he may like salsa with his fish! LOL(I understand his sig can get some people fired up!)

Your post does not contribute anything but that you do not like fish clubs. I do not get the point of the post. How does that relate to the hybrid discussion?

I've felt the same as I do now since the Chicago convention.
I've butted heads with Mo in the past about very similar issues and I think it's awesome that he's stepping up and bringing things to the surface. I've said it before; you're not going to get people to join a club that's "ugly" on the outside (to them). I hope that someday I'll be a member of the new and improved ACA. Right now I'm just beating a dead horse, so I'll just wish you guys the best of luck.

Has nothing to do with anyone in particular, nor any discussion. You got out of it exactly what was intended. I'm tired of seeing the "purists" bashing people in the hybrid forum among other things. Those people are douchebags. You won't find those posts because they get deleted. We all share the same passion, but we have different passions for different fish. There are a lot of fish I simply don't appreciate, I stay out of those forums and don't feel the need to bash others that don't share the same appreciation I do. I also don't feel the need to make myself superior to others. I see way too much bashing by people that feel they have eclipsed a threshold of knowledge and love to talk down to people. It's a learning experience, and we all started somewhere making stupid mistakes. We all still make them. It gets really old seeing the petty fights involving people who are not scientists or researchers of any kind. Fishkeeping is not science as fish do not live in glass boxes in the wild. Even worse with the Herp forum, that place is packed with experts. I'm tired of experts, I'd like to get back to sharing knowledge in a friendly environment and if we disagree it should be left at that.
