Hybrids and the hobby

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
go fishing
you'll catch some gamey fish or eat an old Pacu lol I bet that was gamey
I don't remember mentioning eating a fish that recently consumed ornamental fish food
(however that is a good point people tend to over look) that food is usually for color not healthy eating specimens
-and yes I bet they taste amazing (the fish not the fish food)

Hybrid dog breeds are hybrids between established breeds. This is still an accepted term if not a scientifically inaccurate one. It allows someone to gather an idea of the traits that may or may not be present in the pup from the parents- it also allows people to sell a mutt at ridiculous prices. I really hate comparing mammals to fish or apples to oranges but it happens I guess.
If your Turquoise Cazones breed with a green texas they are not Turqs anymore- sure same family and all but not a pure strain anymore. (also there are several species of Blue Texas Turqs are only one of them) People call them hybrids to specify lack of pure strain but knowledge of the separate influences.(and to sell mutts at a ridiculous price lol)

It should be noted a collection point does not equal a sub-species. A superficial difference in appearance also does not equal sub-species. That is determined by taxonomists using diverse data such as DNA. I read a discussion on cichlidae.com that frankly was way over my head as to weather three supposed new species were species or not, or weather they were in fact sub-species.

What it boils down to me is this: Do I want to use my limited tank space housing hybrids when I could have an actual specimen of a fish that is found in nature?

Screw reading this, I just come to reply to the title

LOL

HYBRID IS THE BEST part of the Hobby. It is what brings "new" and give life to the cichlid world .. Or else all cichlids would be just pretty fish to eat

Would you keep a northern pike, a tiger muskie, and a muskellunge together in the same tank? Better yet would you keep a brown trout, a tiger trout, and brook trout in the same tank?

Agreed, except I think Fish farms here in the states & overseas, and American LFS are to blame for the pollution of pure strains here in the US...and all the idiots that think you could EVER have gotten a pure species from an American LFS. The entire industry is BUILT on hybrids. I mean who really thinks frigging TAXONOMY ever mean't anything to a farmer, or a shop keeper?

that's a very good point, but don't think the gov has no blame either.they're hybridizing Largemouth Bass to compete with the Peacock Bass they imported. It only figures the original largemouth will go exticnt in this area because of this.
