Hybrids and the hobby

Its all about how knowledgeable the person you ask on the subject is that hates them to alot of people a hybrid is a mix of to completely different cichlids(species) and they dont even realize that their making a hybrid when they are breeding a herichthys carpintis escondido to a herichthys carpintis vontehillo and these people also don't even realize that in the wild there are cichlids out there that rely on the survival of their offspring through hybrid speciation an instance where two species are wiped out by fertile hybrids of the two species for example herichthys carpintis were introduced into parts of mexico where herichthys labridens are native to well carpintis are naturally spawning with labridens and wiping that species out in the area and certainly none will be pure carpintis personally I don't see any reason over hating hybrids or mistakes because I know it does happen in nature and is a part of evolution by jumping thousands of years in genetic mutations for one species from just one spawn between two species and personally I love hybrids of all species infact there's a place on the way to the job site I've been on for the past month that has a zonkey its the cools thing I've ever seen grazing infront of someone's house

There are two sides, one concerned with natural critters and taxonomy and stuff, and the other is interested in quality pets natural or not.
To me it's like dogs. Bred forever by man to take a certain shape or perform a specific task so today we have all these different breeds. I think random and unplanned hybrids are stupid and detrimental to the hobby for the most part. Things like flowerhorns are amazing though, it's like creating a new dog breed and really does take patience and know how. The pollution of pure strains can only really happen by idiots breeding random crap and passing them off as something else and they continue to get passed along until it's too late
Agreed, except I think Fish farms here in the states & overseas, and American LFS are to blame for the pollution of pure strains here in the US...and all the idiots that think you could EVER have gotten a pure species from an American LFS. The entire industry is BUILT on hybrids. I mean who really thinks frigging TAXONOMY ever mean't anything to a farmer, or a shop keeper?

Hybrids are fine. Depending on what you do to accomplish your goals....
Have you ever seen a trimachorn? I'm sure people buy them on purpose, somewhere. Usually they're sold as trimac minnows- or euthanized. It takes quite a few losers to make a winner. If you're just breeding 1 winner to another no problem have fun. It's the 1000's of midevils and trimachorns that get sold as a pure strain that get folks livid. Keep them to yourself or sell them AS hybrids. BTW You can always eat them too;)

I was mostly joking but yeah bug fed diets almost always produce gross meat. Bluegill farm raised on bread and pellets has got to be one of if not the best tasting fish out there. Wild caught is certainly better than ok but a bit gamier. I've kind of always wanted to eat a flowerhorn. I bet they're amazing.

Does anybody know if hybrid fish are generally healthier then regular fish. I only ask because when it comes to mammals (dogs and cats and others I'm sure) it seems that mixed breed animals are always less likely to have genetic health problems.??

Yea it's called hybrid vigor. It all depends but generally they are healthier. Older strains of flowerhorn that have been inbred frequently to keep the strain pure are usually the ones that have health problems.

Speaking of "trimachorns", I think I caught an infraction from an mfk mod once when I told somebody their zz flowerhorn when bred with a trimac will not create something "new" and "exciting" haha. Some people have no common sense and shouldn't be breeding fish. Actually they shouldn't be breeding anything including themselves :)
