I think you can keep one in a 55 for quite some time, I feel they don't grow as fast as oscars though

They don't grow quite as quickly as an O but they're big, thick, and messy. I'm with japes, I probably wouldn't keep an adult in smaller than a 75. I'm not sure if they'd bother/eat cories...mine totally ignores smaller fish, but he chases/harasses/beats up similar sized tankmates.

Well, I'll give it a shot.
I'm most likely picking up a 75G sometime around Christmas, or a little bit after.
I'll be getting a smaller chocolate most likely so the 45G will be a suitable grow out.

Yeah it would be fine for awhile, and strictly speaking you could probably keep it in there...but when I look at mine (around 10" or so) I think he'd be pretty cramped in a 55.

I see what you're saying and understand.
I cant wait to get the chocolate, I'll post pics for sure.

definitely not the 35 for more then a very little while, the 55 would last him a long time, but i would not keep him in there permanently.

Thats been established.
But thanks ;)

Any more tips about these guys, pics maybe?

Also, since most people seem to think this is a bad idea, even though I've said it could be a growout.

I'm wdiner what WOULD be a good center piece CA/SA? I've thought about Rotkeils, but they seem a big too big. I don't really want to do rams/appistos, thought about Salvini, but then I'd probably end up with a single fish.

you want a chocolate cichlid and your saying severums get to big .

i didnt realize there was a second page, so i just hit the respond button, sorry for repeating the obvious.

are you looking for a center piece for the 35? if so, maybe a Festivum cichlid, like in my post. they would be fine in a 35, at least for a loooooong time.

are you looking for peaceful or aggressive?

maybe a pair of keyholes? and angel fish? any cichlid that stays under 6".

Well, I didnt know chocolates got too big, now I do.
And I've always been told severums shouldnt be kept in anything less than a 55G. :nilly:

Looking for something somewhat peaceful, and yes it will be for the 36x12x24'' it will go in with a shoal of about five corie cats.

I'll look into a festivum..

The only cichlid's I've kept have been convicts, and africans when I was just starting the hobby.
So cichlid keeping is still new to me.
