This happened to me when I was quarantining some koi in a 200 gallon. The water smelled like rotten eggs but thankfully the water had no taste (was doing 95% water changes every day but couldn't get the smell out of the tank- was way overstocked).

Get an automatic siphon starter:

Works very well and I recommend the large size unless you have a small fish tank. With 2 of them I can do a 90% water change on my 100 gallon discus tank in 30 minutes, including adding the water back in and siphoning all the junk out.

I was cleaning out my convict breeding tank a few days back. I sucked on the gravel vac to get the siphon effect started. Well I didn't suck it hard enough (man, this is starting to sound dirty):naughty:. The siphon bubbled a bit then stopped. I failed to notice a collection of brown water trapped in the lower part of the hose. Then I sucked again, much harder then last time.

I spent the next 10 minuets hacking and coughing brown water out of my lungs. I'm glad the bucket was beside me cause I almost lost my supper.

Lesson learned:
If you fail to start a gravel vac in your first try, empty out the water before sucking on the hose again.:screwy:
lol its happened to me many times

i have never had that happen to me in like 5 yrs of fish keeping

I just start the siphon by dipping the collection end in the tank and filling it up by holding it at an upward angle underwater. Then i lift it out of the tank to get the flow started then put it back in before the vacuum is gone. I have never understood why people sucked to get it started when this is so easy. I guess you would have to suck if you were just using a straight tube with no larger end though.

Ditto. Even with just a straight tube that is the way I do it. I use just a hose for cleaning my fry tank, it starts up no problem when you do it that way. Putting your mouth on it is just gross.

i second the hand bulb. it has a one way valve, and is so much easier.

i sucked up some sludge from the bottom of my saltwater sump. very very bad.
