Water flows to my sump tank with un overflow/underflow system with most of the water going to the underflow. This means that is "pulled" (for want of a better word) from the bottom of the tank as well as skimmed from the top. This keeps the water pretty much clean all the time.

I have filter wool and three layers of mats of different thicknesses in the overflow compartment. The filter wool gets changed weekly and the mats get rinsed out every so often.

The water in the pics is actually much dirtier than usual, cos I had just fed them and also removed some floating plants that weren't working out and had started decaying.

Yeah I have though about them a lot. The thing is the ones I like (leos and pearls) are really expensive, they would probably eat my smaller fish and their bioload is huge.

In my opulent future, I fantisize about a tank with leos and pearls, pigeon blood discus and a show quality SR aro!
