I have dark substrate, black tahitian moon sand, but I would say that he is this color more often than not, even when presented in lighter substrates.

your male texas (which is very nice) looks like it could be FHxtexas hybrid
i saw some on the internet that looked alot like yours, the colourationo of texas but slightly better and the head and fins etc of a FH

He is a hybrid... but I have a hard time calling him a Flowerhorn.
 
Man those Flowerhorns sure are expensive....
 
i snapped a couple of my 9" male for you for comparison. i caught him about a month back in texas waters, so no need for others telling me what it is.. first is without flash, 2nd is with.

My Texas has the same body color but the dots on it are a whiteish blue.

Where in Texas did you get him?
