I.D for CA TX Cichlid

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm guessing it's male, because of the hump on his head like a Flowerhorn.

I wouldn't rule out the fact that this might be a female. I have a female, similar in size, that has a hump similar to the fish in your photo at all times, but gets exaggerated nearly overnight when she goes into egg laying mode. This happens every couple weeks even though there has never been a fish in the tank she could mate with.

How come this guys Cyano is like a dark blue?

Do they turn this color when they are larger?

This looks a lot like a wild strain. The lighting had a lot to do with him being a darker blue in some of the photos. My blue lights have the same effect with mine.

I do notice my Texas has got a bit darker.

I am shocked!!!! This is what I just walked in my kitchen to see... They've gone and done it! I got eggs. Look how his color has changed.

How about stress? A new fish thrown into a new tank with a large tankmate (looks to be an oscar)? I think that warrants some abnormal base coloration. Pearl line? Not sure what that is. Vertical or horizontal? The vertical barring visible in the back half of the fish looks to be stress related IMO.
You are right, may be stress...that's why I asked for pics in 2 days.:) The vertical barring is what looks to be a pearl line, however some larger texas do keep the small black spots visible as juveniles, these seem to be in the wrong spot however. Stress related? Maybe.
Updated pics please!

Some cyano are blue, some are brown. Color is based on the particular fish and it's genes if you will. Maybe color varies from region to region?

Mines look exactly like tuneman13's...Mines has got darker....

Very nice! So is it naturally that dark? Or is it your lighting? Gravel?
