I don't care if you do this or not

Is this the United States? Home of the free? Or Communist China? More laws and Permits is the last thing we need in the USA. No fish in a tank has enough swimming room. Mollies go from brackish to fresh water during different times of the year. So do you make this enviroment in a tank, No. Any large cichlid that travels whole rivers in the wild could never be kept in a tank if you want to treat the fish right. Even the really big tanks 1000g plus would not do justice to most fish that are kept in the hobby. I personnel do not keep fish that will out grow my tanks In fact most of my tanks look understocked compared to most tanks I see on this site and others, but I would never think of giving the goverment more control over the type of fish I can have and can keep. You asking for trouble anytime you ask for more laws restricting peoples freedoms. Educate your friends and those that get into the forums about how fish should be housed do not let new laws restrict personnel freedoms! Sorry for ranting and spelling.

I would like to see more permits given out to keep these types of permits... this is MY thread you can not disagree... he he jk... after seeing some of the monster tanks being kept on this site there definitely is places for some of these fish... you can make the case that even dogs should be able to roam free but they are pets and there is nothing you can do to change that... I believe there definitely should be some fish outlawed rtc tsn paima's and permits given out upon strict checks of their tank and water chemistry...

word to your moms

yup, **** the feds. save the **** like the lions and tigers and chimpanzees that are imported every year. if the fish is endangered then yes it should be outlawed unless you have a permit. i dont see any reason to bring in laws on fish that are tank bred and raised or pond raised for that matter. it is not out of reason to build a pond in your back yard. arapaimas....HUGE....no doubt, but someone has room for them. most dont....some do. if we outlaw those, whats next. they will eventually just make it so you have to pay out the ass for any of the fish you want. if the equipment to house them were not so expensive then more would have them, the sad thing is is that people lie. you can cheat drug tests, you can give false statements in court, are we gonna have the fish police or make a new branch in the animal control agencies. no way to regulate this. unless they are endangered make them available for all

A permit system IMHO is the way to go.

A short questionaire which requires some basic knowledge of caring for larger more exotic fish, a small fee to cover administration costs and to maybe contribute to an organisation for protecting endagered fish. Then you are issued a permit to buy and posses the fish, and these fish cannot be sold to anyone without a permit for fear of the shop being prosecuted and a large fine issued.

Those that are responsible enough, willing to do the right thing by the fish and have enough desire to own the fish will have no problem aquiring the permit, those that arent serious enough to aquire a permit obviously arent serious enough to care properly for the fish. Its not perfect but its simple and will stop clueless kids buying these fish from Walmart and sticking them in their little 'death cell' tanks ;) But still allows serious hobbyists to aquire the fish they desire.

Basically it ensures that the prospective buyer has the basic knowledge required to care for the fish.

Well from this highly intelligent reply I gather that you would have trouble filling out a simple form? Because I cannot understand why an intelligent fish enthusiast would object to having restrictions on irresponsible people buying the fish we love.

Oh but of course:

THESE ARE FISH THEY DONT HAVE FEELINGS LIKE YOU PPL WHO FEEL SORRY FOR THEM. STOP WEARING YOUR EMOTION OUT ON YOUR SLEEVE

You are one of those irresponsible people, silly me!! :grinno:

I'm def. with you on this one hardboiled. It's not very difficult to fill out a simple form that shows that you can responsibly care for a very large fish. I mean, come on guy, what are you thinking toxicfish
