I don't get why people pile 100 polys into one tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Some just use polys instead of gravel:)

They made the best substrate! :D No vaccuum needed, and they also clean out the food that sink to the bottom! :headbang2

A bichir pile is AWESOME...and i LOVE my little wolfpack that roams the tank

I prefer an aquascaped tank because i think it looks better and more natural than a bb with loads of bichirs in but thats just me,
Thats not to say i wouldnt try something like king in my tank because there is nothing better than seeing these ancient fish interacting and lounging together.
Also my aro tank is overstocked for the same reason that the fewer tankmates there were in with the aro the more likely he would attack them, its fine now by the way.
Like it was said before, you learn how to keep certain fish by actually keeping them and if overstocking keeps the death rate down then im all for it as long as the water is quality.

ok.. this may goes to several reasons.. below will list some of the possibilities.

reason1: people have limited tanks, so they are restricted to only a few tanks. In addition, some people here including me are seriously crazy over bichirs (which includes King, Kohaku, FishNCash and many others), therefore we are restricted to only having a few tnks to keep our bichirs at home.

To put it simple, "space restriction" are the 2 words to describe.

reason2: People like to see bichirs piled up together. Some who do not really understand bichirs will say that's silly. However, do u all know why bichirs pile up together? To answer this, It is to allow sense of security.

The keyword is "sense of security".

reason3: People likes to see variety of bichirs swimming together in one tank, as for me, i prefer with some sand and drift wood. However, it's harder to maintain.

However, there must also be a limit of having lots of bichirs in a particular tank as they are heavy bioload. To make it short, "Variety of bichirs" is the main objective.
You made all the good points I wanted to say.

To the guy who asked why? I think this is one of those thread to each his own. It's a matter of preference. You could follow your one inch of fish per gallon rule or try to be a pioneer and do something which only MONSTERFISHKEEPRS dare to you. If you didn't know yet, bichirs shooting into cover and smashing into tank is a trait of bichir defense. If you keep one bichirs and it's spook it will still do this.

What does JDM stand for? I understand you with the polypterus, but all the other fish you put in the tank amazes me, like the loungefish, gars and snakeheads.
I'm not promoting his idea of JDM(Japanese Domestic Product) of fish keeping but did you know he is also the PERFECT EXAMPLE OF MONSTERFISHKEEPERS. He has done where no hobbyists would dare trying to do with all these nice fish.:headbang2 If he posted this in another forum they would charbroil him with flames.

Ok not 100 but in a large group. They just bite each other in the tail and causing them to shoot up into tank covers or smash into walls.

If that impresses you, buy a box full of PENCILS. I do not understand the practice either, it does not make for an attractive display.
That's because you haven't done so, so those are your assumption. If you keep bichirs in pile, you won't see such problems, and you would understand why. :D
Can I borrow your line? "Birds of the same feathers flocked together.":D

Beacreful dude, there is a limit to everything including JDM style tank.:D

Well said FishNCash. I think it really is personal preference. As long as the fish are healthy, looked after and have room to move (not promoting 6 Endis in a 20G) then I have no issue. I think it is absolutly amazing what some fish keepers have accomplished(King El!!!!!!!!) while I would not have my tank that full, I still have it relatively overstocked in order to keep the types of fish that I want.

It is true on most of the other forums, even slightly overstocked tanks get royally flamed, poly owners for the most part push the stocking levels more.

That is one thing that draws me to polys, you can have several huge fish together with virtually no aggression. Try and pack several Jags into the same tank.

What ever stock level you keep, enjoy them and try to appreciate the other tanks posted here be they full or bare.

This thread has stayed pretty level considering the topic.

I don't like JDM style either, but spreading out agression makes perfect sense...I'm technically OS with my 12" Endli and 11.5" Senegal in my 55gal (why I'm getting a 75gal soon) but they knock each other around due to the tank size so....
