I don't get why people pile 100 polys into one tank

I personally say keep it under 5-7 polys even in a big tank. It looks so unnatural and uncomfortable for them.

Lol! Less bichirs in a tank actually makes them uncomfortable as they will try to bite each other. Aggression will likely to happen. And by saying unnatural, saw some Japanes books where they took pics of endlis in the wild underwater and they pile up on each other just like they do in aquarium. A single bichir in the wild is just an attraction to larger predators. I will try to borrow that book again and take pics of it as my scanner doesn't work.

couldnt agree with you more. IMO, bichirs pile up together to have a sense of security, and from what i notice, if its below 10 bichirs, they will tend to fight among themselves. For my case, i keep about 20 bichirs in a tank, i have a total of 3 tanks. One for giant, one for mid sized like dels and retro, and the last one is a grow up tank for the juveniles.

IMHO, i think fights among bichirs are common as they are carnivorous(aggressive) animals. Torn fins are fine with me.

BUT what's most important is you must know what size&type of bichirs to comm with what. I once lost 2 palmas palmas due to comm-ing them together with my endlicheris. Although size may be around the same, however, given the palmas slender body, it wasn't able to fight against those big sized endlicheris and therefore lost their lives. I was quite disheartened back then but it had made me learnt a very important lesson.

PS: I digressed abit to let thread starter know more about bichirs. Thanks.

I have under 10 Bichirs together and no fights at all. Had a lil prob with my Ornate nipping the new Weeksii but he stopped and fin is growing back.

As for why do I want a Bichir pile...

I like fish and want diff level swimmers. Aros for top, ATF for mid and Bichirs for Bottom... So far so good.

I like the prehistoric look in them and the way they move in the water... like snakes.
1 Bichir is not attractive but when you have multiples that swim at diff times (they dont move much) it is very appealing.
Also during feeding time its pretty neat to see multiple fish do the "Death Roll".

To me it gives the balance to moving fish... lets me stare at them and see ALL the details on their body

Last, I never had my Bichirs jump and run into the walls or shoot to the top of the tank... never heard of it. I will watch for that tho

In the end, Ill probly add about 5 more Bichirs and then im done... Bichir Bichir is in my view next :)

IMO, it doesn't matter how many you have in one tank.
It's all personal preference, really. If you want 50 bichirs in one tank, go for it. They're not my fish. haha

@stum and jakob : it's lungfish.:D

anyways, you can't always please everybody, there will always be critics.

Ok not 100 but in a large group. They just bite each other in the tail and causing them to shoot up into tank covers or smash into walls.

Oh yeah another thing that I miss my bichirs never did smash into walls or shoot up into tank cover. Even if I turn the lights off from complete darkess. This shooting up to tank cover and smashing into walls usually happens with less bichirs in the tank. They are also less active and hides a lot when keep in less group.

They made the best substrate! :D No vaccuum needed, and they also clean out the food that sink to the bottom! :headbang2

Couldnt agree more. Most peoples substrate doesnt do anything. But my poly substrate sure does:)
