You keep harping on this theoretical physicist. I guess this is an important field to you. Me not soo much. The sanitation worker taking away your trash may have a lower iq than you but guess what society needs him MORE than your theoretical physicist
While it is a field that I find important, it's just an example, I'm using it because it's the profession with the average highest IQ (130).

Carp mentioned IQ, I mentioned passion.
“Will this person break their butt for the company?” That’s passion towards the company, not towards whatever they’re doing although it’s similar.
If someone merely shows a vague interest “I guess curing cancer would be cool” then it is highly unlikely that they will ever advance far enough to have made their efforts worth anything luck aside.

Honestly this country is what it is today because of people NOT listening someone telling them "you cant do that"
Yes and I want the passionate people to break through that mental wall and do what was said impossible.

The sanitation worker provides a structurally sound bottom level so that the top can focus on their work and evolve our civilization. We can’t have one without the other and advance ourselves.

This actually reminds me (I don’t know why) of this story of a guy with down syndrome I believe that worked at a mcdonalds for 40 something years I believe and he grew to be a local celebrity and loved by all.

Its all good i just think you are both underestimating how important determination is. Anyone that would tell a kid he or she cant do something if they work their asses off is either an idiot or someone who failed allot in life

Let’s say my kid wants to grow up to be an eight foot tall pro basketball player. Should I really encourage that type of thinking?
Also you’re wrong about me not understanding how important determination is. I have a dream of a tank so large that it’ll make news on mfk like the 50k tank did but my dream is bigger than that. I understand people will say it can’t be done, say I’m full of **** and won’t do it, hell, I even want them to say I can’t do it because it gives me all the more reason to try my best and prove them wrong.
When I say I want people to say that things are impossible it had a hidden second meaning which is that it will weed out the weaklings and push the strong minded ones further.

While I do realize how important people like sanitation workers, etc. are, I am not sure if I could ever be a person who just blindly fulfills the needs of a society. That is why I myself have a fear of having a low IQ, because it means that it would be unlikely that I would be successful in the career I myself want to pursue (biophysics).

While determination is important, determination in and of itself isn't going to make you successful if there is something else making what you want to pursue either extremely unlikely, or outright impossible. I am also not a huge fan of labeling kids "gifted" and such. I was in a "gifted" program for all of elementary school, and I feel like telling kids that makes them less likely to put in the effort they need to succeed.

.

No what hes proving is one of the essential functions if not one of the most important functions in a civilized society.

Thats a weak arguement since its not possible to control his or her height. He or she could be a 6ft tall basketball player though.

Yes which is what I’m saying. You have to have a strong bottom in order to have a strong top to prosper.

It can not be controlled so it is best not to tell them it can or can not happen. I’m 5’5” and will not grow much, what if I had wanted to be a 6’ pro basketball player and you had been my dad, what would you say? Be honest.

Do you have kids ?

You do understand that success is not a one stop shop right ? Its individual specific

Again your reaching at examples that do not make sense.

Any rational person would tell you to work your ass off and become a 5'5" basketball player
