I Got A RTCxTSN Catfish!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had mine in a 120 at 4 inches, moved him into an 8' diameter pond when he hit a foot(6 months) and lost him at 27" (8 months later). Don't waste your money on a 75.

+1
To FF
keep him a little while if you really want but in truth, you can't house him unless your willing to go huge so its better to move him on once he gets larger

I don't doubt that. That being said. MfK has some serious keepers. Maybe someone here could take it when it gets big. Your decision ofc. I mean everything I'm saying is IMOO. The whole concept, I can take care of it more than most would apply to my own build as well but it's still not right if it's not big enough

IMO:

** The fish in pic is probably Pseudoplatystoma corruscans, debatably the largest of the TSNs. Not a hybrid. These are known to reach 5'+. Not anywhere near 7'.
** There are no RTCxTSN hybrids in the wild AFAIK, other than escapees. They are largely/entirely sterile.
** I've never seen a hybrid over 4'. All claims of larger ones are anecdotal until proven legitimately.
** Hybrid vigor has little effect on the adult size. It's about growth rate and resistance to diseases.
** AFAIK, the biggest RTC in captivity is 46" - this is the biggest of Arapaimag's in his 52,000 US gal tank. Most have seen pics of 5'+ champion RTC's caught in the wild.

Doesn't matter if it's captive or wc. RTC,given the right space will hit their 5ft potential!
These are fish which should hypothetically be kept in public aquaria size tanks. To anyone who is in London, check out kew Gardens RTC. They aren't in aquarium sized tanks but tanks of sufficient size and they are about 4ft10" maybe 5ft.

RTCxTSN is a hybrid fish meaning therefore it is subjected to hybrid vigor. On this base, due to the fact that TSN and RTC both get 4'+ in the right sized tanks, it stands to say, that the hybrid should get on minimum between 5-6ft.
If we say 800-1000g tanks for RTC and TSN, why would a 500g suffice for a hybrid between the two!!?

Not arguing with anything you said. Someone stated 7+ ft. Not 5 lol.

Yhh I was the one who said 7' for the hybrid and in my honest opinion, I do feel that with adequate space it could happen
@TBTB
The whole reason I mentioned the hybrid vigor was because of the growth rate not full size. My point of mentioning it was to show that it's growth rate seems to overcome even the RTC. I doubt anyone here would say a 500g is enough for a Red tail let alone a fish which most likely will get bigger and at a faster rate. Just my way of thinking about it. This is a dream fish of mine yet even with the size I'm going with now I wouldn't attempt it.
