I Got A RTCxTSN Catfish!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Update: he is not eating... He is really fat (he must have ate alot at the store...) but i have tried beefheart+ and QT'd feeders... What else can i try... Also, are these just "that type of fish" that sit there and are not very active?

Mine did until he got used to the tank. Took a few days to start eating. Once used to it was very active at night. I fed mine chunks of fish filet and shrimp. At night he would swim around the pond and come over to be hand fed. Big eaters, very messy and will grow fast. Will also try to eat anybody that fits in their mouth and that mouth is really big.

But has anyone ever had proof of a 7 foot hybrid? That seems like a bit of a stretch......

+1! Don't you just absolutely hate people that knowingly exaggerate the size of things all in an effort to make them look cool? The only thing worse in my opinion is a hypocrite!

Yeah... REALISTICALLY 3 foot. Maybe 4 foot if i am lucky... And that one photo above of that "7 foot monster" is more like 5 foot. I know photography and it is the angle that makes it look huge. If that photo was a side (profile) view of the fish it would still be a nice trophy fish but not that big.

If the fish in the photo was 7 feet each of the 3 mens bodies would have to be over 2 foot wide if you put it into proportion. When you take a shot from a low point of view (bugs-eye view) it looks bigger...

AFA we know, the mother species of the hybrid is P. fasciatum, not corruscans. So, corruscans discussion is irrelevant here. Fasciatum are not known to be the biggest of the TSNs.

AFAIK (per Necrocanis), P. fasciatum x RTC (maternal species x paternal) was the best one of all tried by the SA researchers for food fish farming purposes. IME and from what I read,

** the hybrid does not grow faster than the RTC (neither in length nor in weight) but faster than the TSN in terms of both length and weight up to the marketable size.
** RTC grows the fastest in weight of the three, because the hybrid's body proportions are closer to the TSN, the maternal species, so it is slimmer than RTC.
** The flesh quality matters too. The hybrid's flesh is found more desirable. It is also well known that RTC's flesh is found objectionable by the south americans because of its dark color.

All in all, AFAIK there is no TSN, RTC, or TSNxRTC that exceeds 5' by much, speaking of w/c champions. Average joe ones do not exceed 4' by much, it would appear. Captive ones struggle to even get to 4'. I'd be thrilled to be shown wrong but with trustworthy evidence.

Redtail Catfish / Pirarara Phractocephalus hemioliopterus
FishBase max 134 cm; common 60 cm; max 44 kg.
Fishing World Records 160-180cm; 56-80 (80-100?) kg; 40 years

Spotted Sorubim Pseudoplatystoma corruscans
FB: max 166 cm; max 100 kg.
FWR: 180-250 cm, 86-150 kg

Barred sorubim Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum
FB: 104 cm; max 70 kg.
FWR 120-170 cm; 20-70 kg.

Tiger sorubim Pseudoplatystoma tigrinum
FB: max 130 cm; max 17 kg.
FWR: 150 cm; 40 kg; 18 years

FishBase is quite reliable and based on science. FWC often mis ID's fish and is far more prone to errors, (un)intentional.

my TSN also sit there very quiet type of fish, but when comes to food, they are just, u know totally change, guys dont scold me, my 4 inch Irwini catfish with spiky body recently just swallowed by my 1 ft TSN. i was just shocked. but they grow very fast i must admit, very easy to keep.
