i got offered a job at pet store

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
OK, here it is. Yes, you will deal with a multitude of dumb people....yes, you will be annoyed, and yes, no one likes doing the job forever....BUT: You're probably going to enjoy it better than mowing lawns, digging ditches, or whatever other jobs that will be available. The idiots of the world are everywhere and you can't avoid them unless you turn into a hermit. I worked at two diff. ones and there are some enjoyable parts. Do you get annoyed with the people on here?? I hope not....because you will run into the occasional "us" that is ready to learn about it and do things right and they will return to you if you give a crap to help them out well in the first place and you may find that someone that is already in the hobby will return because you know your $hit (we hope ;) ) You have to take things for what its worth and don't get bent out of shape because of the morons. I say work there and it will make you enjoy the perfection of what you've done at home. Hopefully when you get home you'll see everything is pretty much in line and you can stare at the unstressed beauty in your tank(s). Besides....you need more money for more tanks and you'll get a discount too!! :woot:

I completely disagree with you. Mowing lawns and jobs on that level is not the only thing out there.

This is what I used to think but you can get a job in a doctors office, vets office, politics office, etc.. You can have a job where people come to you with a REAL problem and you help them out, people look at you with some respect. When you work for someone who's services require some money, you right away eliminate most of the idiots.

And I do get annoyed by most people, including a whole bunch of people on here. It does not mean you have to learn to live with it, you face the problem and you simply deal with it.

You do not have to settle for mediocre.

Why not talk to the manager, explain your doubts to him and say that therefore you would take the job on the following condition:

You will get one week off after the first month on the job.

It is a reasonable condition and might even win the manager's respect and increase your negotiating power.

But what's more important - Within this week you will have time to contemplate and decide whether or not you want to continue, and, if so, on what conditions.

Firstly your doubt will become certainty, one way or the other. Secondly, if you do keep the job, you will be able to tell the manager: "OK I'll do it permanently but I want a,b,c,d and, of course, e "

Finally, should you decide you don't wanna do it, you wan't have regrets then.

And, I think that, since all your predeccessors were idiots and you are such a super-expert-hero, you should get more pay than them from day one.

It is true that you will come upon the idot pet keeper, who you see smashing on the sides of tanks trying to make the fish move, or you over hear talking about how they put a sw fish in a fw set-up. I don't work at a pet store but whenever I am in one I see and hear these people. But if you do take the job, you are probably better off taking care of the fish/animals than the lazy jerk before you who probably thought he could make easy money by feeding some fish. A lps in a mall near me has the most dumbest people working in it and they seem to know nothing about fish. But like shekes said, tell the manager your doubts. Just ask yourself as well, can you handle other people, or just handle working with the aquariums all day? I would take it just because we need more people with the expertese of fish keeping working for the fish.

Fishfood, leave my post alone please!
Don't twist my words. I would really prefer not to be associated with that load of crap.

I am asking you nicely. :grinyes:

Im sorry, I thought you said to tell him your doubts. Must have been another poster...

Cuban Jey, I would take the job if you like it and it is a well run lfs/pet shop than you work with critters and learn the business, if you don't like it you find another job. As far as meeting idiots at work, they are everywhere that you deal with the public. I think that even working at the morgue someone would give you lip. Doctor and dentist offices are bad about that because you meet people when they are feeling like crap in the first place, as far as a vet's office, how are you going to react when some shrieking women slaps you for letting her viscious little yapper dog bite you, That happened to a friend of mine.
All jobs have draw backs, most have good points. Maybe this is the job for you, maybe not, only one way to find out.

I have found the best way for me to make a difficult decision is to write down every pro and con I can think of. Put it on paper, as to be detached from your emotions and kick start the brain, like this:

On the one hand... * On the other hand...
_____________________________ _______________________________
I would learn a lot about the lfs biz.
* I would have to do it the bosses way.

I would help a lot of people and fish.
* I would encounter even more dung-eating troglodites
who don't share my passion for fishkeeping.

I'll take care of someone elses tanks all day.
*I'll take care of my own tanks the rest of the day.

I might meet some hotties who like fish.
*I might meet alot more hotties if I bussed tables at Hooters.

WORK is a 4 letter word.
*FISH is a ... Hey!

I'll get sourcing and breeding info only the pros know.
*Then take care of my own tanks the rest of the day.

I'll get employee discounts.
* I can then mark them up and sell them on MFK or eBay when I'm not at work or taking care of my own fish.

My work-place will be a pet store.
*My living-place will look like a pet store.

I can always quit.
*And be blackballed in the the business community and never find work in this hemisphere again. Well, maybe the Army will take me.

I will live, drink, eat, sleep, s**t and die fish.
*I might go postal, but be brought up on lesser charges of destruction of personal property and cruelty to animals. IF my boss doesn't get in the way.

I will bring home a paycheck doing what I love.
*Then spend that paycheck on what I love.

I can take up a different hobby, like GOLF.
*Then go to work at the pro shop at my local golf course...

I will keep this post simple. There are two main reasons to ge the job...

1. Discounts

2. More knowledge of fish

Notice that money is not a reason, you also cant let dumb people bother you, they will always be around.

I agree. Truth be told, I have had over 30 (legitimate) jobs. If I had an opportunity to do something that looked interesting, I took it. If it didn't work out I gave notice and moved on without burning any bridges.
If you hate your job money is no compensation for misery. Plus it won't work out; something will happen to move you out anyway.
It is a fact of life, like death and taxes, there will always be one or more jerks to plague you wherever you work. Learning how to deal with them is just another aspect of the JOB.
You will learn more about the industry and the fish themselves from the inside. It could lead you where you want to go, or teach you that it isn't for you, and working at Hooters might be your calling after all. I am 45 1/2 years young and on W/C, soon to be retrained. You're, what, 21? You got years to cushion you against job mistakes you might make (felonies aside :) ), so if it feels like the opportunity your nature seeks, sieze it. If it suits your nature, it will work out.
(Disclaimer: The author of this post does not and cannot gaurantee that it will work out. It is the recipients' responsibility to make the attempt).
Good luck!
