I completely disagree with you. Mowing lawns and jobs on that level is not the only thing out there.

This is what I used to think but you can get a job in a doctors office, vets office, politics office, etc.. You can have a job where people come to you with a REAL problem and you help them out, people look at you with some respect. When you work for someone who's services require some money, you right away eliminate most of the idiots.

And I do get annoyed by most people, including a whole bunch of people on here. It does not mean you have to learn to live with it, you face the problem and you simply deal with it.

You do not have to settle for mediocre.
I did not say settle for mediocre and I also specified that "or whatever jobs might be available". I was simply stating that even in a doctors office or wherever there are still morons no matter what job you'll deal with and idealistically they'll look at you with respect....IDEALISTICALLY. Truth?? The people who aren't the doctors, dentists, lawyers, etc. will always catch some crap from the @$$holes in the world. My point is, he should take the job and as g8karma and guppy stated there are benefits and some sort of monetary compensation to be had. Even if there are other jobs....he hasn't found those ones yet so if the boy needs work he may as well start here just incase he's not a silver spooner and mum and dad aren't payin the way. Heck I'm just gettin ticked now cuz some people think things are "mediocre". Pi$$ of, do what ya gotta do to pay the bills. As someone else stated you can move on w/out burning bridges.

It's not mediocre kid, take it and work with it while you can until you find that doc. office job. Petshop hours are more flexible anyways incase you're doing college right now or planning on it.

Just go to work all you lazy bastirds!!! I'm working as an instructor at 3 diff. airports.....am I settling or should I wait for Delta to call me and offer me a job with no jet time....hmmm.....lets see I'll "settle" for now until I'm on my feet. :screwy:

I can speak from experience here. I ended up leaving the hobby for many years because I got burned out working at pet stores.

However, like everyone else said, there are great perks to working at a pet store, discounts being the biggest. Make sure that you don't work too many hours and don't take it personal when customers don't care about their fish the way you do. That was the one thing that drove me to leave the hobby.

Of course I am back with a vengeance now (I'm going to pick up a 200 in the morning for my wife's RTC). So don't be afraid to give the petshop a chance. If you find yourself burning out on the hobby, just quit the job...
exactly!!! :clap

I am sorry but I would not take it. I worked in a pet/fish store for about 6 months. I ended up absolutely hating everything about the damn people and fish.

You see how time to time you get people on here asking something along the lines of if they can put a Red Devil, Flower Horn, Arowana, Catfish, etc.. in their 30 gallon? Well you deal with idiots like that the whole day or some old woman *****ing at you why her Neons keep dieing on her. Did not learn anything new during the whole process, just witnessed once again how cold and stupid people are.

On top of all that, couple of months later I found a job that is by far easir and almost literally pays double.
there are not that many dumb ppl out there just a bunch of uninformed ppl.. the dumb ppl are the ppl that say they know what they are doing and dont know a thing...ppl that are afraid to ask.. yes you will prolly deal with many super easy questions but nobody is born with fish knowledge.. when i first started keeping fish i made stupid mistakes but i was not afraid to admit them and ask ppl how i can fix it or do it better...so if you have to tell ppl that a RTC cant fit in a 30 gal fine, but if you have to tell a person everyday that he cant fit a RTC in a 30 gal when he comes in with a dead fish to buy another one then that person is stupid.. not many questions are stupid.. not learning anything after someone explains it is stupid.

yeah im still thinking about it ,though i gotta make my mind up quick cause he said show up at 3:00 pm tommorow

id do it....chalk it up as experience and fish contacts. meeting other fish lovers and signing them up to MFK...then you will get paid to so thats a plus.
