i would do 2 at most
one on warm side one on cold side
He needs 4 hides because its for 2 gekos. That way they wont compete for it, like they would if there was only one warm hide and one moist hide. That is a good way to avoid figthing and stress;)

As for the paper towels/sand debate Ill go for the paper towels:D Sand is simply to irrelevant for this animal well being in comparison to sutff like proper food ,hiding places ,etc to be worth the rick of gastrointestinal impactacion, a potencial letal condicion (and hard to treat also in such a small lizard). I once again tell you guys that I have photografic evidence that this thing can happen, its not a "ho´s afraid of the big bad wolf" kind of thing. A good report also of what can happen can be seen in the 2006 issue of Reptiles US. The risk is there. Now that I have my own leo I see why this guys can get into troble. Every now and then Belladona (as I call my rescued female:D) misses the crickets she is trying to cach and also she fleks its tounge into the substrate, all ways of entry for sand grans. I think the main issue with paper towells or news paper its that as some say they are ugly. But we must put the animal´s well being and survival in front of any aestetics. They are not using the sand because the leo needs it they are using it because its pretty. If you ask me I think leos are completly indeferent to sand or any other substrate, so we must go for the one that is safer;)

Yes VF keeps his ADULTS on sand, but sand also requires a lot of care if you were to use it. Paper towel is nice because you can see where the gecko has use the restroom. Yes it isn't the prettiest but is the healthiest for the gecko. Most gecko breeders today use paper towel in their shoeboxes.

Err excuse me.
For TWO happy healthy content geckos you need to provide a hide EACH for them on the warm side, and one EACH on the cold side.

I have housed a pair together with only one hide on each end, and one stayed in the cold side all the time because he did not want to share a hide! I put 3 each in and each side, and you know what, They used every one of them god damn hides!

This is a common mistake people make, the animal has to choose the best place to hide of thermo regulation. Please do not post information that is false if you are not experienced or have not researched, especially for noobs. What is one extra hide anyway?

God what is it with a good %age of people on here, always wanting to scrimp and scrape with what they provide for their animals!

lol thats why i bought a gargoyle gecko, so i don't have to worry that much about substrates because he sits on a fake plant half the time, and dont have to worry about temperature because they like room temperature ;)

LOL sometimes I prefer keeping the 'easier' reps out of choice. Its nice to have at least one pet that is simple, and easy as pie to look after and provide the best for!

I enjoy the more differcult ones too, I like a challenge :nilly:

Really can't wait to see pics of the little guy! :grinno:
