I own a breeding pair of low grade zz rd that i cant get to do anything but fight. I seperated them putting the f in with a m jackdempsey and not even two weeks later there was babies swimming around the tank. Wanting a better breed I put the f rd in with my texas. within weeks she laid eggs but within two days they turned white and then they ate them. A few weeks later the same thing happend so I figured, being inexperienced as I am, that the texas isnt furtile and they would never produce fry. However i just read that the white on the eggs was likely fungus and i probably could have prevented this from happenning. My questions are: if the zz rd lays eggs are they furtile already or does the texas have to fertilize them kinda like salmon? also should i treat the water with methylene blue or malachite green prior to breeding? And was the white on the eggs fungus?

I know my post is a little long winded so if you want just skip to the bottom of the post and read the questions I need answered. I would greatly appreciate the help.

Female cichlids to my knowledge will lay eggs even if there is no male in the tank. (I personally experienced this with one of my female jaguars in the past). If there is a male present and a pair bonds, the female will lay her eggs (unfertilized), and the male will fertilize it with his sperm. I hope this answers your questions.

There is no need to add chemicals in the water to prevent fungus from growing on the eggs. Simply if the eggs weren't fertilized to start with, they will start to grow fungus or turn white anyways.

thank you. you did answer one of my questions about the fertilization process. so i am left to wonder if possibly my texas is sterile? How old does the texas need to be before he is sexually mature? he should be ready cuz he is 7 1/2 to 8" long and he is like 3 yrs old.

Ok so they aren't commonly sterile. so I guess i should just give them some time then. I moved them into the tank the rdxjd happend and I'm hoping for some more of the same magic. Its a smaller tank and I'm able to crank the heat up a little more in this one. I'm thinking maybe it wasn't warm enough in the other for the tex (78), the new one is about 82. we shall see soon hopefully. but Ricky do you agree on not treating the water?

ok. thank you. I will be more patient He is probably my best looking fish and will make a great dad when the time comes. so now I'm in wait and see mode.

your tex should be fine.. as should your female.. sometimes it just takes a few goes for a pair to get it right.. they have to learn.. mine took 3 attempts before i got fry..
goodluck with the breeding..

Here is a pick of my favorite. My texas that was given to me with a tank.a friend of a friend had it and didn't know what he was. apperrently they bought it as a jackdempsey. They soon realized he was too mean and a tank destroyer so they gave him up. I will post pics of the rd in a bit.
